Lions schoolboy outrage
18 Jul 2005
The Golden Lions Rugby Union have officially objected to the selection of the SA Schools side after just one of their championship-winning squad made the team.
Lions CEO Andy Turner confirmed a letter had been sent to the South African Rugby Union. Turner added his voice to the many who were stunned when the national schools squad was selected following the Coca Cola Craven Week for under 18s.
Monument, who are the country’s number one school, supplied eight players to the Lions team — a Lions side that smashed everyone they played at the Week and one recognised as the champions after playing in the featured match on Saturday and winning it comfortably.
The Schools selectors insist they picked the best squad and a SARU representative said that because the Lions were the best team it did not necessarily mean they had the best individuals.
Keo has a suggestion to end this debate. Why not let the Lions Craven Week team play the SA Schools side. What’s the chances of the Lions winning?
According to those at the recent Craven Week, these chances are very good.

Pity this sort of thing goes on at school level.
Why does the springbok coach speak of combinations yet at school level it is individuals?
It would be interesting to see the break down of provinces and race. Does Monument have any players of colour? I could be wrong but I guess not. These promising youngsters will be better of playing in the UK/ France / OZ. Ask Clyde.
Watch us destroy promising talent due to bungling administrators and selection based on race as the primary factor and not Rugby.
I propose the winner of SA Schools and Lions game becomes the undisputed SA Schools team.

agreed
see how our next genration of talent gets left out in the cold by slectors who should not be anywhere close to a selection panel. Look at their FA@#$UP with the U19 team… 8th in teh world? Let that e a lesson to you ******** – in rugby, only the best rugby players will do – not teh greenest or most pointy nosed!
Have your say
