The Paarl Boys vs Paarl Gym clash is one of the biggest derbies in South African schools rugby. With current and recent Springboks such as De Wet Barry, Marius Joubert, Schalk Burger, Jean De Villiers being Gym alumni, and Corne Krige & Gurthro Steenkamp playing their schoolboy rugby at Boys High, the match has even more interest.
Paarl Gym are currently rated 3rd in South Africa, with Paarl Boys 10th, and both have had impressive results against other major schools opposition. Boys High have convincingly beaten SACS and Rondebosch in recent weeks, and have wins to their credit against Paul Roos, Affies and Maritzburg College. Gimmies have had an even more impressive season beating Bishops, Queen College, Affies and SACS. They have lost only to Grey College this season, going down 34-13 in the Easter festival.
The telling comparison may be of their respective matches against Bishops. Last weekend, Gym thrashed Bishops 46-0, while Boys High lost to their city rivals earlier in the season.
Gym won 13-3 in last season’s encounter, but Boys High were 25-6 winners in 2003.
