South Africa’s five Super 14 franchises face a series of tough warm-up matches before the southern hemisphere showpiece kicks off on 10 February.

The Cats and Bulls meet this Saturday in two matches involving teams of equal strength, while the Cheetahs take on the Spears in PE. The Sharks’ first outing is only on 28 January, when they play the Bulls in two games at Sun City.

The biggest warm-up match involving South African teams is on 21 January when the Stormers meet the Bulls at Newlands. With tickets being sold for between R10 and R20, over 40 000 people are expected to attend.

From an overseas perspective, the Aussie derby between the Brumbies and Waratahs, and the Kiwi clash between the Crusaders and Highlanders, should both be worth watching.
