Stormers propped up by Fullard

The Stormers received a boost on Thursday when re-evaluation of prop Neil Fullard’s injury has deemed he will be fit to start the Super 14.

It was reported that Fullard, who suffered “a pinched nerve” in his neck, was unlikely to partake in the competition at all and that coach Kobus van der Merwe was urgently seeking a replacement front ranker.

“The original assessment was that Neil had an injury similar to that of Rob Linde,” Technical Director Gary Gold told keo.co.za. “Re-evaluation has shown, however, that the injury is not nearly as serious. We’re quite confident Neil will return to full fitness within two weeks.”

With such a imposing schedule, the Stormers coaching team have constantly reinforced the importance of “vigorous and disciplined rotation” to avoid burn-out, and thus back-up players such as Fullard will have vital roles to play in the weeks ahead.

Fullard was mentioned expressly by Federico Mendez when the Argentine was with Western Province as a prop with “immense potential”, and there are many in the Cape who hope he’s the long-term soultion to the region’s tighthead woes.
