Jaco van der Westhuyzen could join the Stormers for the Vodacom Super 14, in what would be a massive boost for the Cape franchise.
The Bok No 10 is recovering from a knee injury in Japan, but should be fit to play by the end of February.
“We will investigate the possibility of acquiring Jaco’s services,” Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe told Cape Times rugby writer Stephen Nell.
The Stormers lack depth at flyhalf, with doubts remaining over the ability of Peter Grant and Naas Olivier to make an impact at Super 14 level. Van der Westhuyzen would be the perfect man for the job.
The former Bulls player will be released from his contract with NEC Green Rockets if Bok coach Jake White says he needs to play in the Super 14 in order to be prepared for the Test season.
Meanwhile, the Stormers could field an all-Boland centre pairing of Jacques Badenhorst and Piet van Zyl, after Gus Theron sprained his thumb and Corniel can Zyl broke a cheekbone in a warm-up session.
Hooker Schalk Brits is also expected to make his debut for his new franchise.
Possible Stormers team to play Bulls:
15 Justin Peach, 14 Egon Seconds, 13 Piet van Zyl, 12 Gus Theron/Jacques Badenhorst, 11 Tonderai Chavhanga, 10 Naas Olivier, 9 Paul Delport, 8 David Hendricks, 7 Justin Melck, 6 Hendrik Gerber, 5 Gerrie Britz, 4 Henk Eksteen, 3 Attie Winter, 2 Schalk Brits, 1 Doug Wheatley.
Subs: 16 Huia Edmonds, 17 Tommy Dixon, 18 Duimpie Theron, 19 Mpho Mboyise, 20 Charl Blom, 21 Joe Pietersen, 22 Jacques Badenhorst/Sarel Potgieter.
