Brilliant Brian
22 Jan 2006
Brian O’Driscoll inspired Leinster to a European Cup quarter-final as the Irish province hammered Bath 35-23.
Bath still qualified for the last eight, in a group that is missing anything Welsh and Scottish. O’Driscoll, according to reports, was instrumental in the bonus point win and Leinster’s qualification for a quarter-final.
Welsh glamour club Cardiff crashed 48-3 to lowly English premiership outfit Leeds, but the big win was not enough to get Leeds a spot as the best runner up.
The French, typically, are well represented in the last eight, with defending champions Toulouse again the favourite to go all the way.
Quarter-final draw
Toulouse v Leinster
Biarritz v Sale
Leicester v Bath
Munster v Perpignon

Leeds who can’t buy a win in the premiership knew they needed a win and at least five tries to make it to HC quarters (their game being two hours before this Bath/Leinster game), and produced a fantastic dsiplay of rugby smashing Cardiff 45-3. Justin Marshall ‘marshalled’ the troops to some splendid rugby win Andre Snyman going over twice.
On Friday night, Leicester smashed Clemont-Auvergne, and whiel Breyton Paulse scored a consolation try, the wing playing opposite him scored four! Tom Vardnell may have pace, but he is quite small, only 20 and for the forst of the tries handed Paulse off with the greatest of ease. Paulse also dropped a few balls – he does look past it.

I used to regard BOD as one of the greatest centres this decade has seen, but his book where he describes how “He almost died” has tempered my admiration of his playing skill with total disregard for his attitude.

Good game by BOD. Felt sorry for Frikkie Welsh playing for Bath on the wing, the only time he got the ball was when he was covering the touch line. Seems to me the Bath players struggle to pass to the left.

BOD looked great last weekend as well. KEA, you gotta feel sorry for any guy playing outside 9 for Bath, play such a boring style of rugby (due to the fact that they have a strong pack). Munster-Sale match was the pick for me. Every Munster player had a good game and easily dealt with the current leaders of the English Premiership. Showed how to beat Sale, compete like hell upfront and stop Chabal behind the gain line. There after, the likes of Hodgson, Cueto and Robertson find life a little difficult.
