Spears clawed

Spears clawed

Life has not improved much for the Spears in a week. Hammered by the Cheetahs 48-0, the Spears were on the receiving end again in their friendly against the Cats.

The Cats lead 24-5 at halftime, but only managed one more try in the second half, as opposed to two Spears penalties, to win 29-11.

The Spears will no doubt talk this one up … only an 18 point loss against an experimental Cats team.

The pre-tournament warm-ups are pretty meaningless when it comes to scores, given the nature of the matches and the line-ups that are played.

The established teams use it as a trial to test certain combinations and certain first phase plays.

No doubt, Pieter de Villiers (coach of the Spears), will have found some comfort in a scoreline that was not an embarrassment.

His opposite Frans Ludeke would not even give the scoreline a consideration. It is why one team is playing in the Super 14 and the other will be cannon fodder in the Currie Cup this season.

spears will struggle in currie cup. They need money to buy good players.

Even with money though, there are few good players out of contract in SA at the moment

who scored for the spears? how did their flyhalf-Dollie play? anyone see the game?

Dollie’s general play was okay but he missed a couple of penalties and a conversion in the first half.

Cats backline must improve their tactical kicking because their kicking skills were sub-par
