Heyneke warns against arrogance
23 Jan 2006
Heyneke Meyer has stressed that assuming the Bulls’ run of home games early in the Super 14 will automatically translate into success could prove fatal to his side’s championship challenge.
Speaking to keo.co.za, Meyer did not believe that the draw which sees the Bulls start the competition with a run of four home games following the away trip to Bloem favoured his side.
“If you look at last year, we had five games away to start and only won one of those five. We were totally written off, and then we came back and won all our home games,” Meyer said.
“I actually prefer to tour early, because then if you suffer a few injuries you’re playing top sides that you’re not expected to beat anyway. Whereas when you’re at home, the presure is really on. Also, a lot of the teams that tour later – say for example the Reds last year – are out of the competition and it makes it very difficult for them to tour here. They don’t have much motivation.”
The Bulls start their home run against top Aussie contenders the Waratahs and Brumbies, with Meyer warning against over-confidence spurned by the Bulls’ unbeaten run at home last season.
“This year we’re playing some very strong teams at home, and we are under pressure to beat them. If we lose those games, we are going to put ourselves under pressure for the away leg.
“The draw is not something I’m factoring in as either a positive or a negative. I will prepare the side to win every game and won’t target any games. All the sides visiting Loftus will still be in the competition and will be fresh, so we have our work cut out. The mistake South Africans make is assuming a home game equals an easy game, but when your visitors are the likes of the Crusaders, the Brumbies and the Waratahs it couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Meyer believes his side has learnt from last year’s disastrous away trip, and is far more mentally tuned to what is required to excel in the extended competition.
“We must be more mentally tough this year. Whatever the draw is you must be able to cope with it.”

23 Jan 2006, 16:48 pm
the bulls have an excellent draw, and should not waste an opportunity like this. they must dominate the leagur table and end in 1st or 2nd position.
23 Jan 2006, 16:49 pm
Herm
You are funny!!!
23 Jan 2006, 17:01 pm
geez like i am getting stressed out allready. heyneke’s right, the pressure to win the first few games will be immense.
but having said that, the draw looks very nice. if we can win most of our home games, surely we can take the chiefs, reds and force away?
23 Jan 2006, 17:02 pm
grrr bud what’s up with you and the smiley faces??

It used to be 7 games to ensure a place in the semis now it’s probably 9. In fact to be assured of a home semi, you need to win 10 games. With a full complement the Bulls could manage eight wins, maybe nine. But with their current injuries and their rather dismal touring record, it will be tight. They might reach the semis, but I think they’ll struggle to get it at Loftus. I hope they prove me wrong.

Bigg,
Bonehead supporters? Mmm, and how will you describe those anal attackers from the cape or the Gumboot brigade from the capital city of Nigeria( formerly known as Jhb)?

23 Jan 2006, 19:23 pm
boys, i hope all the sa teams do well, but bulls supporters remember this time last year? 3 times currie cup champs, meyer coach so some consistency, you bulls boys were saying similar things to what you are saying on this thread.
remember the first few games? down to the cats, disasterous overseas. Heyneke is just trying to keep things realistic. one year of not propping up the log does not make you shoo ins for the semis this year.
after saying that, i still really hope your boys do well.
23 Jan 2006, 19:40 pm
I can’t wait for 10 Feb for the Southern hemisphere season to start. I’m tired of watching all this Northern hemisphere **** on Setanta here in the States.
23 Jan 2006, 19:48 pm
Meyer is correct, no point in being arrogant it is a long season.
WRT the rest of you BONEHEADS, it is going to be a SUPER long season, I hope the cheetahs do well but I see WP is already saying the same as last year ‘if we can only play for 80 min the way we played for those 1st 10 minutes in the 1st half before team X nailed us’
The season hasn’t even started yet idiots!
BTW, the Bulls team to play the Stormers will be the same come the last league match, the ***’s are going to lose all their ‘top’ player due to injury before the end of the season anyway, they will be overworked as they can’t field a 2nd team worth ****.
23 Jan 2006, 19:57 pm
Wise words.
especially for a valie.
23 Jan 2006, 20:01 pm
Howzit Stan,i trust you and your own
had a blessed festive season.
I asked santa to send you some
sense, but he said he was santa and
that job would take at least little *****.
23 Jan 2006, 21:48 pm
How come only the SA teams use their stars in these warm ups then lose them to injury?
Grr:
24 Jan 2006, 01:36 am
Stan your Sperm Whale comments are hilarious mate!
24 Jan 2006, 08:01 am
“En nou die Blou” What the **** does that mean. “And now the Blue”, doesnt make sense to me at all.
24 Jan 2006, 08:07 am
x-fire you will only understand that term if you are wearing a bulls jersey and have had a good couple of dubbel brannewyne en coke in your system. Its a bulls thing relax.
24 Jan 2006, 08:33 am
HM is probably the only guy in Tshwane who remembers how the Bulls started the Super 12 last year……
24 Jan 2006, 08:37 am
Typical SA touring mentality, admitting that you’re not expected to win overseas so the pressure’s off. This sort of complacency trickles down to the players who with their limited headspace take it as gospel that it’s alright to lose your away games.
And who came up with these new passwords. Mine is rubbish.
24 Jan 2006, 08:41 am
Christian Cain,
Better change your password then. My password is fg904th.
24 Jan 2006, 08:41 am
So true Ig. Remember how confident they were b4 the CC final? lol. We will just have to wait & see what happens…
24 Jan 2006, 08:44 am
Ig (Smiley),
Don’t think any SA team will ever win the Super14. Every year they aim for the semi’s. No SA team ever go out to win the damn series.
24 Jan 2006, 08:45 am
HM warning the Bulls about arrogance, is a bit like someone warning Freddy Murcury and Rock Hudson about the dangers of homosexuality; i.e. a bit late now!!!
24 Jan 2006, 08:48 am
24 Jan 2006, 08:48 am
Damn….
24 Jan 2006, 08:49 am
That’s better!
Rember boys, die Leeus bly baas. Ons verloor dalk, maar ons is altyd baas!!!! Have a good one today, ****!!!
24 Jan 2006, 08:56 am
If Naas’ sentiment are correct in predicting the outcome of the World cup; if a SA side do not win the Super 14 series then 2007 success is highly unlikely, I for one sure hope someone, anyone of the SA franchises take the glory.
Blou Bulle is baas!
24 Jan 2006, 08:57 am
Grrr – makes ure you leave a space on either side of your smiley code !
24 Jan 2006, 08:57 am
These people from Tswane like to talk **** before a ball has even been kicked… but saying that, I hope that at least 2 SA teams make the top 5 if not the semis… would be good to have an SA team in both semis, or even better, both semis being played in SA… but that’s wishfull thinking!
24 Jan 2006, 08:58 am
Al ons sien is die Blou Mascien
:D
24 Jan 2006, 09:03 am
If the BB’s don’t do well with the draw that they have, they are just a bunch of tossers. They can walk away with at least an 80% success rate if they play their cards right. But then again, we all know that they play and win finals in PTA about a week too early. If they can keep their inflated egos on the ground for the duration of the S14, maybe just maybe….
24 Jan 2006, 09:10 am
Yip, sure is going to be a difficult year.
I suddenly not that confident anymore.
Bulls have to hit the ground running this year.
24 Jan 2006, 09:16 am
Once those Dutchies hop on a longhaul aeroplane, they lose all that hometown Boer cockiness. Look at the scoreboard— the Bulls absolutely SUCK on the road!
