Jaco turns to Jake for help

Jake White will fly to Japan with Jaco van der Westhuyzen in two weeks time to hold negotiations with the NEC Green Rockets.

Die Burger on Thursday reported that the Bok coach would be making the trip in the hope of getting permission from the Green Rockets for Van der Westhuyzen to play Super 14 rugby for a South African franchise.

Earlier this month Van der Westhuizen was rumoured to be joining the Stormers, who are in desperate need of a quality No 10, but the player is still locked into a contract with his Japanese club.

“According to my contract with NEC, I am only allowed to play for the Springboks,” Van der Westhuizen told Herbert Pretorius. “But I’m optimistic that they won’t stand in my way of playing Super 14 rugby.”

The Bok flyhalf, who missed the end of year tour with a knee injury, is expecting to be fully fit in six weeks time. “My rehabilitation has gone well,” he said.

Van der Westhuyzen was dropped during the course of last season, with Andre Pretorius taking ownership of the green and gold No 10 jersey. The NEC pivot would greatly increase his chances of regaining his position if he played Super 14 rugby – a competition of a far higher standard than Japan’s Top League.

Will only benefit the Boks to have Jaco playing the S14 with the Bok centres at his outside.
He will have to adapt to having **** ball with no forwards to speak of though!

Jake wants him at Stormers will they let him play at no 10. From what I ‘ve heard things are not well in their camp.

  • 7.GhostShark: Reply to this comment

Playing in Japan kept him fresh at least. Still only a stop-gap at flyhalf, especially with Butch “the real deal” returning in march.

Jaco the akedis running on hot sand is not the answer for SA but could be the solution at 10 for the Stormers.

    Lol @ 3rdday… akedis?

Would be interesting to see how Jaco will fit into the Stormers game plan, should he get an oppurtunity ?

This guy is class, we all underate him.
Fully fit at 10 he will do the job.
And Butch James “the real deal” LMFAO will get one game in and take 13 months of for another injury, so he is hardly a threat to Jaco.

  • 17.L-LEE: Reply to this comment

With the Stormers weak powderpuff pack i think Jaco-San should stay in Japan, eat some sushi, have saki and sing some karaoke.

  • 18.St.Petersburgbok: Reply to this comment

    Yawn

I thought it was a couple locks and props the Stormers needed?

Even if Jaco did arrive, I can’t see him being given the fly half berth at such a late stage.

And then after the S14 reverting back to Grant?

Sounds like a load of bollocks.

I bet the Stormers management is hoping NEC don’t allow Jaco to play….it would put them in a very uncomfortable position having to tell Jake that Jaco doesn’t fit in with their plans.

  • 19.GhostShark: Reply to this comment

Provided Butch “the Real Deal” James (he should seriously start calling himself that) can still actually walk, he’ll prove all you doubting Thom-arses wrong.

  • 20.Zero: Reply to this comment

Agree with StP, there is no way in hell that Jaco will be playing S14 at this late stage

  • 21.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

rehabilitation has gone well, but how fit is he?

in yesterday’s live interview, moaner also said grant is their first choice – so will they change that view once jaco arrives?

jaco had a very good 2004 for the boks, and our backs looked good with him at 10 – he will also be surrounded by all his bok team mates, jaco running out for the stormers can only strengthen the side – grant can be nurtured and given game time as the season progress.

jaco’s kicking also improved, if i am not mistaken, he had 100% record in PE against the frenchies???? might be wrong though.

Keo: I am also interested in what’s happening with the Dan Qeqe fund….

  • 23.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

i wonder if HM is also not expressing some interest in this move – he needs a back up for roets. but will jake want jaco to play 15 – or does he want him to get game time at 10?

  • 24.bluewhiteblackgreen: Reply to this comment

It is VERY important that Jaco plays Super 14. The mosty likely scenario is that he will play for the Stormers and play second fiddle to Grant until fit. When he is fit then they will play horses for courses.

  • 25.Grrrr....I'm a Lion!: Reply to this comment

Why is he going to the Stormers when we all know he wants to play for the AWESOME CATS!!!

  • 26.Markotter: Reply to this comment

Where ever he plays, he must still learn how to make first time effective tackles, and not always hang on opponents for a second or so, and get shrugged off anyway. The first line of deffence through the midfield has been broken so many times because of Jaco’s ineffective tackles (as with Monty), and many unwanted tries have been scored against the boks resulting from this.

  • 27.Stan: Reply to this comment

“The Stormers are desperately in need of a quality flyhalf”
They are desperstely in need of a lot of things!

Jaco, be wise and stay away. Why did De Waal, Hougaard, Russell and the likes left and did not want to return? Go play for any other team behind a decent tight five( not light five) or return to your roots in Pta.

  • 28.Train: Reply to this comment

So all the stuff he said about playing in Japan improving his game is ****?!

My view is get out of Nippon but don’t go and play S14. Rather sign for Leicester it will improve his game and prepare him for the WC in the Northern Hemisphere.

Jake should also support the idea as he then has a SH fh (Pretorius) and NH fh in JvdW.

Playing S14 will sharpen his game but he isn’t going to learn anything new.

  • 29.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

Train – only problem with your theory is that Jaco is more suited to SH conditions, and AP’s kicking game is more suited to NH conditions.

  • 30.Train: Reply to this comment

Fair point, but Jaco was a huge hit at Leceister in his brief visit there.

  • 31.Ig: Reply to this comment

It would be good to see Jaco at the Stormers from a Bok perspective, but like i mentioned earlier its all a dream IMO, i rather they spent the Cash on securing a couple of hard ******** not another twinkle toe back !

  • 33.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

yeah, nearly all the quality south africans who go play in england become star players in their teams. its because the standard of rugby there is so poor, yet the professional set-ups of the clubs so good. its an environment in which they excel.

  • 34.Ig: Reply to this comment

Sort of correct Munki – i suspect playing in the UK is might less stressful than playing here in the republic !

zero u zero now u spoilt my birthday. and it was going so well.

kaplan had better not ref anything to do with the Bulls even if it’s two different teams playing whose result will influence the standing of the Bulls. Then we are in our dingis in.

kaplan and his fatboy dim ollie won’t be allowed to cheat the Bulls outta anything this year.

i’ll run onto the pitch and pull a Piet van Potch on myself.

  • 36.Train: Reply to this comment

S14 is probably superior to Heinekn Cup but – all things being equal. But I think there is a lot of value from getting familiar with the conditions, grounds and the players – seeing and playing against the English and French teams will be very helpful.

  • 37.parisian: Reply to this comment

Jaco is a choker, lets face it. His best game for the Boks was the hammering against Uruguay…where any schoolboy number 10 would’ve looked good. Against big opposition he just isn’t the answer. But beggers can’t be choosers…so I reckon the Stormers should take him if given the chance!

And what about his performances for Leicester where he was outstanding and afterwards he had a brilliant yr in 2004 when we won the TN… Cmon, he is a good player.

Ollie may be a big boy, but he won’t be able to handle the words he hears. When I close my eyes at night all I see is that photo of him smoking that cigar with that smug look on his face.

I can imagine what he was thinking “I can’t believe we just won the CC by cheating and bribing kaplan”

  • 42.wls: Reply to this comment

The guy was class at Leister
he is a good player, to me looks like he plays on confidence.
Japan may have weakened his game, it looks like the super 12 moved on while he was playing in Japan, came back and was out of sorts.

  • 43.stinkvinger: Reply to this comment

What is JAco gonna do at fly if he doesn’t get the ball. Stormers don’t need another fly, the need a tight 5

  • 44.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

the bulls needs a captain, the cats need a flyhalf, the cheetahs need all round experience, and the sharks need a miracle. elke huis het sy kruis (sorry robd)

  • 45.Boychie: Reply to this comment

    Munkiboy,

AP is not allowed to run at his opposite number when playing for the Boks and now he has become known as a “kicking flyhalf”. That is so untrue, he is a better runner and distributor than Jaco on top of being a better kicker. Watch AP play for the Cats and see him take on his opposite number. It is such an injustice forcing such a brilliant player into a certain pattern. Let him play his game, you cannot take his instinct out of the equation.

  • 46.Narnia: Reply to this comment

Returning from Japan and playing for the Stormers, Jaco will be used playing behind a light five not a tight five.

  • 53.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

Boychie – I acknowledge AP is a good running flyhalf, and scarily Jaco also has a decent kicking game. But I’d take a fit and on form Jaco over a fit and on form AP in any conditions. Especially on the hard and fast fields more common in the SH.

I think the most dangerous flyhalf we have though is Butch. Fit and on form, he’d be my first choice. Then Jaco, then AP. As for the rest. I think they are all some way behind at this stage.

Hough beter as De Waal-hulle – André Bester
    2006-1-26

Hy moet net ‘n behoorlike kans in groot geselskap kry.

  • 63.DavidSp: Reply to this comment

If anyone’s in desprate need of a quality 10 it’s the Cats, not the Stormers.

Besides playing for the Cats he WILL have Bok centres at his outside and be close to Pretoria where his heart probably longs for.

  • 64.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

So DavidSp – the best use of our flyhalf resources is to get the top 2 in the country to play for your S14 team?

    St Pietersburg is right
No rated No.10 stands a chance with the current assortment of tight fives the stormers included in their squad, moneywise, Jaco is better off with his current employees.
The kind of slow, short service he’ll receive from Conradie will ensure another injury soon.
So why bother? good shopping trip for JW though.
Currently, JwdW is the only viable option for the Boks in June, with AP, BJ not recoverd, De Wall not rated by JW and the Bulls duo not ready at the test level.
