No quick fix for Aussie woe
27 Jan 2006
A detailed report into the Wobblies’ shocking 2005 season has revealed major deficiencies, confounding comments by ousted coach Eddie Groans that the team was “one win away” from getting things right.
Australian Rugby Union CEO Gary Flowers confirmed that the situation will not be immediately rectified by a new coach,
“If we are to be brutally honest, we are significantly behind many of our competitors in key areas of the game,” he told the local media.
“We remain number one in areas like defense but elsewhere –restarts, offloads, lineouts and scrummaging — we are deficient compared with our major rivals.
“What this review is telling us is that we are not simply one win away from getting things right,” he said.
The statistics revealed that the Aussies ranked a remarkably low 10th in winning their own lineouts and fifth in stealing their opponents’ lineouts.
They ranked sixth in getting quality ball from scrums, seventh in restart receptions and sixth in offloads.
“The clock is ticking but we will put the right structure and the right coaching team in place to put the Wallabies in a winning position for 2007,” Flowers continued.
“The good news is we know where we have to improve and we now have the platform to ensure that we do improve.”

27 Jan 2006, 10:18 am
Watch out for these guys come WC 2007, they r gonna suprise many!
27 Jan 2006, 10:22 am
Where are we ranked in those key areas of the game??????
27 Jan 2006, 10:33 am
nope the aussies won’t be able to fix it before 2007
27 Jan 2006, 10:38 am
The fact such a detailed analysis of their performance is quite impressive hate to say it but thats what u call professionalism. Rather than just using the typical saffer response of they didnt try hard enough or they didnt show enough passion LOL
27 Jan 2006, 10:50 am
Like their English counterparts the Aussies are the only team with a pedigree of winning in the professional era.
And it would be a brave man to bet against them reaching the next RWC final.
And only a team led by indomnitable and indegfatable figures such as Jonno, Wilko, Greenwood and Lawrence willl be able to put them to the sword.
Such figures dont exist in SA society let alone its rugby; are few and far between in France and rare as hen’s teeth in NZ.
If the draw permits its an Aus vs Eng final. And we all know there only one wnner in that game – even if they drag W*tson out of retirement and had K*plan running the line.
27 Jan 2006, 10:53 am
The longer they battle. We’ll see how good or bad they are come the tri nations. It takes a loooong time to build a new team.
27 Jan 2006, 10:55 am
Er oops, was supposed to read, the longer they battle the better.
27 Jan 2006, 10:57 am
If they get their frontrow sorted, they will be a different kettle of fish. The entire Aussie bckline is pure talent and if they can start getting clean ball, they will run rings around many teams, especially England and the like with suspect defense. Only the pure genius of the Bok defense will be able to limit the attacking abilities of the AB’s and Aussies…
**** it is fun being a complete tosser like StM and The Tackler…

redox
more Typycal Saffer Responses.
They didn’t want it enough.
The opposition were hungrier.
Our studs were too short.
We eat up this **** year after year.
To All
Put some more responses on this list. We can forward them to the Cats and Sharks so that their coaches can just pick them trandomly after each week.
Cheers RobD and Grrr…

Cant doubt there professionalism, streeta ahead and yes they will get it right…..eventualy. It will not happen before 2007 W/cup.
27 Jan 2006, 10:59 am
Hell…. word of caution JUSM! I would never ever ‘scratch’ the Aussies off. 2007 is still some time to go, bet they will have sorted themselves out by then.
27 Jan 2006, 11:03 am
Don’t forget that in their “annus horribilus” 2005 the Wallabies and Eddie Jones nevertheless managed to still chalk up a test win in Sydney over the Boks…
27 Jan 2006, 11:08 am
Tackler and in your best year to date – who knocked over the combined pacific nations ?
27 Jan 2006, 11:10 am
Good point Tackler, just remeber that the Aussies managed to beat the Boks and the Boks in turn managed to beat the All Blacks, hence we are all equally kak!
27 Jan 2006, 11:10 am
Tackler
Get your head out of your sheeps arse and stop living in the past. The Aussies had a shocker of a year!

Been there, done that , got the t-shirt (under Strontli).
I almost feel sorry for the buggers, the I remember that they are Aussies and a happy grin spreads over my face.
27 Jan 2006, 11:38 am
It’s very impressive that they can produce those statistics, I’m surprised that their defence is rated no.1, I think they are vulnerable to turnovers and counter attacks.
They won’t be down for long, hell, the Springboks turned it around in a season and that was with the burden of Markgraaf and van Rooyen.
27 Jan 2006, 11:40 am
Of course there’s no quick fix to their woe. Doesn’t it take 4 years to qualify for Aussie citizenship?
They wont have any decent front rankers for at least that amount of time.
27 Jan 2006, 11:44 am
And don’t forget in 2003, just 2 months after having scored 50 against the Ozzies…..they lost the one that really counted.
27 Jan 2006, 11:44 am
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
The Aussies will alwys be competitive at a world cup. They are the epitome of BMT.
England, too, will stick it to the Boks in the pool stages in a big way if we don’t do something quick about delivering on promise.
“We have the best scrum in the world”. Then show us and dominate against the All Blacks and England.
“Jean de Villiers is the best thing to come out of SA for years”. Really? I’m waiting.
“Percy is the best full-back in SA and takes the pressure off the flyhalf by maintaining a high success rate in kicks at goal.” Really? He kicked like **** last year and we would’ve beaten France if it weren’t for the fact that he swopped his boots for a sand-wedge. His grace under the high-ball is laughable and he has lost his pace.
Dump Gert Smal, find a flyhalf who can do EVERYTHING expand the pool of playing springboks and we’ll start fulfilling our potential.
27 Jan 2006, 11:47 am
Yeah its also the fact everyone forgets they have how many injured number one players? and look how close they ran the Poms LMFAO.
27 Jan 2006, 11:49 am
Methos
1.Our flyhalfs goldfish died, he was in mourning…
2.The other team had more points than us…
3.The south easter started blowing that caused condensation and our cool gloves didn’t work…

Funny that you should say Percy swapped his boots for a sandwedge. Go check on Ruggaworld for the Rugby\Golf article.

Methos,
1. It was the waitress. She poisoned us.
2. everything was going so well in training, but on match day, the oppositions started tackling.
3. It was the altitude
4. It was the lack of altitude.
5. Our kickers are not used to that kind of rugby ball.
6. The waitress poisoned us again.
7. Stuart Dickenson….
8. They cracked our lineout code.
9. They filmed our training sesssions.
10.We have a lot of injuries.
11. We really need to get a new waiteress….

LMAO Munki
27 Jan 2006, 12:09 pm
More for the list.
We are burnt out.
The crowd was too noisy.
It was too cold.
It was too hot.
It was raining and we’ve never played rugby with a wet ball before. (This is strictly a WP one)
They hurt us.
We couldn’t find the stadium. (Strictly Bafana Bafana)
We got our Duckwort and Lewis calculation wrong. (Cricket)
Cheers

Stmichel you are a real ****. Have you heard of a French player called Michalak, a Kiwi named Carter, and a Safa named Madiba (in society) and Matfield, Burger, Habana, Fourie, Januarie, De Villiers (on the field)?
27 Jan 2006, 12:22 pm
and of course we’ve heard this one from nearly every sports team in the country at some stage or another…..
there was a pay dispute hours before kickoff which disracted the players.
27 Jan 2006, 12:25 pm
Methos, what is the ruggaworld address please?
Thanks

27 Jan 2006, 12:35 pm
bokfan1 – StMichel talks a good game, unlike his team which battles to play one.
even their fortress is crumbling. I saw a whole stand had dissapeared in November…
27 Jan 2006, 12:38 pm
****, just had a thought – IG, why dont you let St. M and Tackler have a go at each other, it might keep us amused until the beginning of the S14.
(Just imagine the “By joves”, “forsooths”, not to mention the statistics that Tackler is so fond of, flying thru cyberspace.)
27 Jan 2006, 12:48 pm
Offside – i would suspect if the two fo them started flaming each other me might die of boredom – so opinionated and so little to say !
27 Jan 2006, 12:52 pm
All you people are forgetting one important point: as it was Australia who toppled the West Indies off their perch by winning in 1993 in the West Indies, so it was that is was *South Africa* who knocked the Aussies off their perch in rugby. It was *SA* which delivered the killer blow, after laying them low in the final Tri Nations match last year.
The Aussies had a horrible year *because* of the damage inflicted by SA, destroying their moral etc etc.
The same SA which then went on to slaughter NZ at Newlands:-)
BTW StM, Jonno has retired from international rugby. Do try and keep up, won’t you my good man…
27 Jan 2006, 14:00 pm
Most people on here will gladly admit to being Tackler, but i dont think anyone has Balls to embarress themsleves by saying they are STM. Mind you how many people would happily admit they are a limey LMFAO.
27 Jan 2006, 15:42 pm
The last game of the tri nations, with Rogers at 10, the aussies managed to 3/4 tries past the AB’s.
The ozzies have alot of class players. The AB’s are meant to be invincible, but a back to basic England team gave them a good run for their money.
The BOKS , as long as they stay to their brutal approach will be good, anything outside of that gameplan and the BOKS fall flat.
Boks need to find that backline of theirs
27 Jan 2006, 16:20 pm
wls – i think you’re wrong on that one. at least StM has pride in where he comes from. Tackler is a turncoat and a coward. I’d rather be StM any day. The drugs he gets must be amazing, given the warped sense of reality he has.
27 Jan 2006, 16:55 pm
urgghh … mmmm
1. umm
27 Jan 2006, 18:04 pm
the All Blacks are the most overrated team in world rugby. If they didn’t have such a cool name, the haka, and those freakily big and ugly polynesians they’d lose most of their ‘aura’.
In mean the only time they’ve even won a world cup was when they hosted it. And we weren’t even invited. Its all marketing and hype I tell you.
Now dont get me wrong, they’re still a good side, but they get given far too much respect in my opinion. And that makes it so much easier for them.
27 Jan 2006, 19:01 pm
Munkiboi,
Spot on my dear chap.
Bnd by and large its only the celtic fringe that dominsates the English rugby mdeia and the dosile surrendering attitude of SA rugby that perpetuates this AB myth.
Fortunately English rugby does not buy it. Its why 13 Englishmen won down there in 2003.
28 Jan 2006, 02:09 am
and 15 Englishmen got slaughtered in 2004:-)
The way you go on and on about 2003 (the once in a blue moon visit; bunch of spineless wanking chickens), is like us going on and on about 1998.
The rest of your comments are a pile of racist ****.
28 Jan 2006, 08:19 am
there is plenty of time to get it right before the world cup. there is well over 20 tests to be played in the mean time.
The prop situation will take longer to sort out. The biggest problem in Oz is the under age rugby laws. There is a 1 metre pushing limit. This means there are a number of mobile props and converted back rowers (so you have 4 or 5 loosies on the pitch). These props are lambs to slaughter when they get to senior level.
This has to change otherwise we will see more incidents like Ben Darwin at the world cup and Dunning getting minced at Twickenham.
28 Jan 2006, 10:21 am
2 reasons the aussies lost last year
1) No scrum
2) No Larkham
Last year they brought in rules to make the scrum more of a contest. The result was that the aussies couldn’t get up to their usual tricks.
Eddie thought Giteau could fill Larkham’s boots but he didn’t measure up. Doesn’t anyone wonder why the floundering fortunes of the Brumbies and the Aussies co-incided. Injury to Larkham, look no further. Larkham is the ultimate running playmaker at 10, Wilkinson the ultimate kicking playmaker in world rugby but Carter is the whole package.
Both England and Australia are several notches worse when their best tens aren’t playing. The kiwi don’t have to worry they still have luke mcalister and their flyhalf depth is so good they were able to say no to Carlos Spencer who could also make the top ten od tens in world rugby.
28 Jan 2006, 10:27 am
Oh, and I forgot
3) Not giving Dan Vickerman game time, the loss of lineout maestro Justin Harrison to European club and playing “donkey drop” Brendan Cannon to throw his **** pies.
