Spears “don’t expect” to trounce Stormers
27 Jan 2006
Spears coach Peter de Villiers does not believe his side has sufficient quality to beat the Stormers, yet.
Speaking to keo.co.za, a realistic De Villiers stated that he was not expecting to overcome the largely-first choice side named by Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe for tomorrow’s friendly in Wellington.
“The Stormers have a great support base, have a side packed with Boks and have a lot to prove,” De Villiers said. “It’s short-sighted to think we’re gonna win, but equally short-sighted to think that we will not be desperate to keep the score down.
“I’ve said this before, but people must understand that it will take three years to get this team going. I am not putting pressure on the players. I want them to enjoy their rugby, we are working on a lot of things and will experiment tomorrow. What works we take forward and what doesn’t we abandon,”
De Villiers’ side were much improved last weekend where, despite losing to the Cats, they delivered a far more optimistic display than when on the receiving end of a Cheetahs’ 48-0 caning the week before.
“We did play better last week, but also worse. It was better in the sense that the guys started to gel as a unit, but worse in that we created far more chances and opportunities but just didn’t capitalise.
“It’s not all doom and gloom. We had 35 000 turn out to watch us play the Cheetahs, and whether they’re genuine supporters or just people out to determine if we’re good enough or just a bunch of baboons I don’t know. Having people interested in what we are doing is a blessing and a big privilege, though, and I’m confident we’ll win over supporters by establishing a brand of rugby that is distinctly South African. After all, what greater obligation does any rugby side have than to its supporters?”
The one factor in the Spears’ favour, a lack of expectation, is neglected by De Villiers as having any bearing on tomorrow’s result. Many of the Stormers’ first side will remember the last time they visited Wellington wearing blue and white, but De Villiers is equally dismissive of suggestions that the loss to Boland will have an impact.
“There is nothing in anyone’s past that determines their future. I don’t think the Boland game will have any effect on this game. They are a different team, bolstered by a lot of Boks. We have our work cut out.”

I actually think they can compete at that level. The backline has as much potential as any other in the country. The loosies are as good as any. Big experienced locks, With a frontrow that is at least as good as the Stormers’s.

Ja, this relegation is kak but this is how I see it. All the teams know about it, it’s a fact so everybody including the players have to pull up their socks. The Cats have been the crapest team in the Super 12, Sharks had a **** one last year and sorry to say the Bulls still have the record for losing all their games. If the Cats come last then they need to be relegated, they are out of excuses now. Same with the other teams, if they play k@k it’s their own fault. I’m just wondering who I will support next year IF it’s the Cats…
27 Jan 2006, 15:14 pm
Grrr
So will the Cats be seen as the cheese and wine team next year?? Or will it be the sharks……

Don’t know, I had a little bit of hope for this year then PissAnt opened his ***… We have very little depth and no flyhalf to speak of. Snyman just doesn’t do it for me… Also when ‘Pret’ gets back he will probably be rusty. The Sharks have players that are almost ready like Butch plus everybody is writting them off already. They might suprise a few people. Hell, it might even be the Stormers and let’s not forget the Cheethas. Also, the Bulls said they will NEVER lose last year’s CC final and look what happened.
Blueblood: It WASN’T Kaplan’s fault so stop stalking him already!
27 Jan 2006, 15:20 pm
I reckon that the schools in EC have enough good talent coming thru them to sustain the spears.. If you look at the sa u21 and u19 sides there are many players there that have already been bought by other franchises…
PdV needs to start scouting and picking up these players, skewls like grey high, st Andrews and the likes are strong rugby skewls, kirwan frieslar has just been picked to represent SA in u19 tournament, he matriculated from grey last year. He is an awesome loosie, we cant let him get away… Gwavu is also a strong lock, marlin a strong scrummie, why are thet gettin away?
Come on PdV buy them now and train them up.

28 Jan 2006, 09:58 am
Jis, you okes can talk a lot of kak!!!
Especially some of you. I’ll just dismiss it as ignorance. But then you should be careful about coming onto a forum like this and show it.
Hooker2
The Spears Management is on formal record that they are NOT interested and WILL NOT take players from the relegated team. We dont want losers. Capish!
Oh, and if you guys knew what is really going on in this area with regards to our talent (who are on the same par as 36 of our players now contracted to the other “big name unions”, making you guys screaming with joy) and the fact that we have identified (the first fanchise to do this in any case) more than 500 youngsters from the three feeder unions to be developed, you would at least realise that you will first have to sit back for a while and think before you talk so much kak!
The Super 14 agreements are sined and sealed by all the franchises. The Spears WILL play in the Super 14 next year and one of your big shot teams filled with arrogant useless players WILL be rellegated after this Super 14.
Cry me a river!
28 Jan 2006, 10:01 am
Oh, another side thought. You guys really thought Pieter de Villiers was gonna tell keo that he’s confident that the Spears will beat the Stormers today!!!
Phew!
30 Jan 2006, 08:13 am
Kandas, I suppose that you belive what all the politicians tell you as well. What was the score against the stormers on Saturday. 78 -0 I believe. With that type of score expect over a hundred against the top S14 teams. Your 36 Par players really didn’t shape in that one. Wake up, smell the coffe. It’s time for a reality check!!! The big question is who is you little team going to relpace at the end of the S14. The bulls and the sharks seemed pretty well matched on Saturday. Mmmmmm

Go stand on your corner and stop sledging the Spears. They are going to play in the S14 if you like it or not. Give the guys a chance. At least Kandas knows what he’s talking about when it comes to rugby. Hookers normally let their pimps do the talking and they do the …..
