Double blow for Cheetahs

The Cheetahs smashed Italian club Benetton Treviso 52-11 in Welkom on Saturday, but suffered injuries to two key players.

“[Centre] Alwyn Hollenbach dislocated his shoulder and could be out for a while,” coach Rassie Erasmus told keo.co.za after the game. “[Lock] Ockert Brits also damaged his ribs, which could be a problem because we’re a bit thin in that area.”

The Cheetahs ran in seven tries in a one-sided romp, but Erasmus says it wasn’t as easy as the scoreline suggests.

“They are a European Cup side, so we did well to beat them by such a big margin,” he said. “We threw the ball out wide quite a bit and scored some good tries. Our scrumming was also very encouraging.”

The Cheetahs have won all three of their pre-season matches beating the Spears 48-0 in PE, the Force 29-19 in Perth and Benetton 52-11.

Scorers:

Cheetahs – Tries: Heinrich Stride (2), Chris Kruger, Cobus Gobler, Kabamba Floors, Ronnie Cooke, Trevor Leota. Conversions: Meyer Bosman (3), Gaffie du Toit, Willem de Waal (3); Penalty: Bosman.

Benetton Treviso – Try: Brendan Williams. Penalties: Marius Goosen, Andrea Marcato.

Good on the cheetahs, not too much to read into this, sub standard opposition.

The real thing starts with the Bulls running at them.

    GO cheetahs !!

Can any one tell me about this Treviso team? Would the Spears have been a better match up? Who do they play in Europe? Who else are they playing in SA?

Go Cheetahs, I cant wait to see these guys against ‘real’ opposition in the S14 proper. I’m realistic and dont think they’ll make the semis but they will definately not be relegated. I predict a few red faces and bruised ego’s of the antipodean variety leaving our shores this season.
Does anybody know if they are playing any games in Kimberley???

Travelling to the Oranje Outback and winning here will not be easy.

The Country Couzins are going to nail some big teams, that is for sure, and then lose to the minnows- ea Reds, Stormers

I see the Cheetahs as potential semifinalists (assuming we can dislodge a few NZ teams this time) along with teh bulls. I give them more chance than the Stormers or Sharks…

Treviso qualify to play in the Heineken Cup, but they traditionally don’t make it past the initial pool stages. They have a few decent players, probably a little stronger than the Spears (by the sounds of things). That said, I can’t imagine they would have sent a full strength team considering they are still playing in their domestic season and the 6 Nation starts next week (so most of the Italian players would have been cotton-wooled).
