Stormers dismiss De Villiers’ claims

Stormers head coach Kobus van der Merwe has rejected Peter de Villiers’ accusations of Stormers thuggery on the weekend.

Speaking to keo.co.za from the team’s camp in Swellendam, Van der Merwe barely dignified De Villiers’ comments with a response.

“I don’t think those remarks are even worth commenting on,” Van der Merwe said. “Suffice to say that anybody at the game could have made their own conclusions.”

Van der Merwe and the squad return to Cape Town on Wednesday evening, with the next two days primarily an exercise in team building.

“The camp’s main function is a bit of span gees. We’re trying to build stronger relationships, and hopefully the guys will have bonded by the end of the camp. There will be a rugby component, we have a training session tomorrow, but the main focus is on building morale in the squad.”

Cmon guys, give the Stormers a break. Now they can also boast that they have beaten a team with 70 points. Maybe one day they might achieve this against a real team…

Just my opinion, but WP / Stormers have become a bunch of ‘skytes’ – from the proud honourable players such as Morne du Plessis, Carel du Plessis, Boland Coetzee etc. they’ve gone to thugs like Corne, Robbie Fleck, Werner Greef (was a brilliant player until he gave in to the thug mentality), Bolla Conradie, Marius Joubert and de Wet Barry – neither can complete a match without at least two high dangerous illegal tackles etc.

Remember the incident a few years back on FS stadium where Robbie Fleck kicked Andre Venter’s (one of the hardest but most honest and clean rugby players SA has ever produced) face to shreds?

FS has shown them up to be a bunch of prima donnas – fantastic on paper, but terrible on grass – FS arrived 2 years in a row for a Newlands semi final with a no-name no stars team, yet through honest rugby, commitment and team spirit dented the egos of the show ponies

    jo,

as a staunch WP supporter for many years, actaully all my life, it saddens me to agree with you.

the honour and passion that was once the very essence of WP rugby has disappeared.

there is a cancer in SA rugby in general, but no-where more evident than in WP rugby at the moment.

It has to start a the top with the stormers. Look at the player, they clearly perform under JW, yet under these poepals all they do is showboat and lose by 40 points any time they come up against a decent side?

    Jo

The way i remember it is that Andre Venter hit first….?

    Interesting….

The freestate came to Newlands twice and beat the WP .. with no names blah blah …

The freestate came to Loftus and beat the curie cup champs in their own backyard in the final.

    Now that is entertaining.

    Hobo,

That’s certainly not the way I remember it. As far as I can recall, a ruck & maul had occurred and Fleckie tried to sneak around the blind-side with the ball when he got tackled hard by Venter (does he know how to tackle any other way?).

Fleckie objected and threw punches at Venter who initially responded but then just held Fleckie down. Both players were sent to the bin.

    Offside & Hobo
Heres version 3. This is how i actually remember it , Venter puts in a big hit on fleck then just goes for a bit of afters and pushes fleckies head into the grass keeps it their ala mark andrews. Fleckie responds by putting boot to venters face to get him off (he could have chosen some place other than venters face) and venter throughs a few punches as is to be expected. Think they were both at fault to be honest

    Pissant,

It’s not an SA Rugby problem. Just a WP/Stormers problem.
