Stormers Spear-tackled
30 Jan 2006
The Stormers will get “blown away” in the Super 14, according to Peter de Villiers, the coach on the receiving end of a 73-5 caning from the Cape side on Saturday.
Clearly agitated, De Villiers refuted claims that he had instructed the Spears to spoil, despite the sin-binning and red card handed out by referee Marius Joncker in the first half.
“If the Stormers play like that in the Super 14, they’ll get blown off the field,” De Villiers told keo.co.za. “Eugene [Maqwelana - the prop who was sent off] was bitten first, the blood was pouring from his ear. He shouldn’t have retaliated but he did, I’m not condoning that but I can promise you he was not the instigator. These people have a history. Schalk Burger gets yellow carded every week internationally and then suddenly he’s this angel. Come on. They got away with a helluva lot that they won’t be in Super 14, and the fact that my guys responded to their approach meant we played with 14 men for 57 minutes, and that’s why the score was so emphatic. Not because they played well.”
De Villiers believes that the Stormers’ intention was to instigate “problems” from the kick-off, thus destabilising his youthful side.
“People say I instructed our players to play beyond the law, but it’s the opposite way round actually. I heard from inside their squad that they wouldn’t take any nonsense, and our guys heard that too. When we were on the field and saw how they were playing, my guys made the decision that they weren’t going to allow them to push us around. We had no protection from the referee so either we could be bullied or respond in kind. We chose the latter.
“One thing people can’t take away from me is the fact that I won’t ever waste people’s time. We have never practised to play outside the law. Never once have I told a player to do anything outside the law. I will never do a thing like that. I’m no loser, but winning isn’t everything. It’s important that my side plays the game in the right spirit, and I honestly don’t believe that was possible this weekend.”
De Villiers reserved special criticism for the Stormers management.
“They are an entity that demands respect, with 10 Boks in their starting team. Why, then, don’t they play to their strengths and stick to the law? When they needed to use their head to win the game, in the first half an hour, the score stayed at 0-0. Only when we had effectively shot ourselves in the foot by getting someone sent off did they build some momentum and built up a big margin on the the scoreboard. They really didn’t lool that good, they couldn’t help themselves when they had to. They had to wait for us to make way for them by becoming ill-disciplined before they did anything respectable. I have studied the game and I can’t believe how much they got away with. There’s no other way to say this, the refereeing was biased on Saturday.
“I think some serious questions have to be asked. I mean look at the case of [flyhalf] Isma-eel Dollie. He was chased away from Cape Town because he was told he couldn’t tackle. Look how he tackled on the field on Saturday. He was the best 10 on the field and showed a lot of so-called talent spotters up.”
De Villiers’ side have now lost consecutively to the Cheetahs, Cats and Stormers, and believes public perception has already turned against them as a result.
“I don’t know what to feel. I read in the papers about court cases that will be launched to prevent us from joining the Super 14. There is a conspiracy against this side and now it’s extending to the fied. The Stormers were not a good advertisement for South African rugby on Saturday, and I wouldn’t be so positive if I were them. They used experienced internationals to distract our guys. They’re young and maybe naive, so if that is the victory they wanted, well they got it. I wouldn’t be proud of it.”

30 Jan 2006, 15:41 pm
Gotta find some excuse for conceding 70 points…

Go Donut boy! Sherrif is very proud. You’ll be as big as Sylvester soon.
30 Jan 2006, 15:42 pm
I would like to see his reaction after his first Season in S14. And if the Stormers played so **** after 30 mins, then why didnt the Spears have points on the board?
30 Jan 2006, 15:43 pm
Interesting…
I wonder what Moaner’s take is on this.
30 Jan 2006, 15:43 pm
Well that is straight and to the point. Not having seen the game, but assuming De Villiers is correct in what he says, then the STORMERS should hang their head in shame.
They are forever squealing that THE SHARKS “play rough” now they apparantly “rough up” the new “kidz” on the block.I wonder if Mr Mallet has anything to say?
30 Jan 2006, 15:44 pm
I reckon 73 points isn’t a hell of a lot if the opposition was sub-standard to begin with and played the last hour with a man short.
30 Jan 2006, 15:47 pm
I was at the game and what Peter is saying is spot on. The Stormers was poor during that 1st 20 minutes. When Ashley Johnson was off, they still battled.
I had to remind a mate of mine that the Spears had 14 players.
I agree about Dollie and I said so in an earlier post. He made 1 excellent break early on which gave him confidence. He also set up Wakeling’s try, by running straight at the defence, taking the tackle and popping up a beautiful pass to Wakeling who only had to run in and score.
His tackling was a revelation. I remember a big tackle on Andries bekker.
Remember Nick Mallett also said Breyton Paulse was too small and can’t tackle.
Peter de Villiers I say stuff them and work with these youngsters. You proved at u21 level you can work with young guys. It’s a pity Paul Delport is not with you. He is the best scrummie at the Stormers and hopefully he will get a run.
30 Jan 2006, 15:47 pm
Of course the Stormers management will revert to other tactics to discredit the Spears. Especially now that they know they can’t go to Court anymore about next years Super 14.
It’s Ok.
The Spears will meet Province again in the CC. Twice.
Can’t wait.
30 Jan 2006, 15:50 pm
RobD
At least the Spears scored a try with 14 men.
More than what the Boks can say from the England game at Twickenham.
30 Jan 2006, 15:50 pm
I can’t comment because i didn’t see he game but i hope the spears have something extra we haven’t seen yet!!!
Imagine Jake White moaning about the ref the way Peter is. Come on mate, grow up.
Anyway, the sormers were out to prove a point after the hammering they recieved from the bulls last weekend……
30 Jan 2006, 15:52 pm
yeah, knadas. Really just trying to wind up the Stormers fans…
30 Jan 2006, 15:53 pm
Coming to think of it…
73 – 5
53 – 3
…with 4 tries from the Stormers in the last 10 minutes when the Spears were playing with 13 men.
30 Jan 2006, 15:53 pm
I didn’t see the game, and I don’t doubt for a second that the Stormers probably used intimadatory tactics, but it doesn’t matter what brush ole Pieter uses here, the simple fact is that his side are kak and are going to embaress themselves and South African rugby in general next year, when they start playing with the big boys.
I like the idea of promoting rugby in the region, but the fact is that they cannot compete with the big boys
30 Jan 2006, 15:54 pm
Didn’t England play the last 10 mins against 14 man All Blacks last year and still not manage to win that one? If you have a player sent off, you have to take the punch. No pun intended. The fight with the red card also resulted in a yellow card for the Stormers.
30 Jan 2006, 15:56 pm
Pity the Stormers can not act tough when playing the Bulls.
Pakslae all around.
30 Jan 2006, 16:01 pm
Pieter – cry me a f&*%$ing river – you just have sour grapes my friend… Deep down you know that your spears team will not deserve to be in the Super 14. How can you have teh spears in stead of the Sharks, Stormers, Bulls, Cats or Cheetahs… F%$# you Pieter…
30 Jan 2006, 16:01 pm
The Spears are a brand new outfit, still trying to prove themselves and with plenty of time to build. Stormers are an experienced Super 14 team, a couple of Boks in the mix and some established combinations.
C’mon guys, at least judge the Spears after the CC.
Like Kandas says, 54 – 3 with 10 minutes still on the clock.
Nobody expects the Spears to be winning their first few matches against against the big names but they are showing plenty of guts.
30 Jan 2006, 16:08 pm
If Chuck played for the Spears the Spears would have won…
30 Jan 2006, 16:10 pm
Grrrr,
Sounds like Chuck was playing for the Stormers if you read the above article. Sems like there where plench round houses etc flying
30 Jan 2006, 16:11 pm
Daar Kaap se moffies gooi Handsak vir mekaar !!
Piter D V get on with CC prep cause that is what you will be judged on this year !
Conspiricies en al is part en parsel ou pal !
Rememer that you must finsih above the team that gets relegated to even be taken seiously , and that will be despite them short of their boks which they will throw in you face.
maak soos raasie , moenie raas nie , net wys wie baasie is !
30 Jan 2006, 16:13 pm
Van die os op die jas, why is Dries Scholtz starting as a hooker on your pole??? I know I’m not the rugby brain that some of you okes are but hell I’m pretty sure he plays in the backline…
30 Jan 2006, 16:13 pm
The Stormers will get relegated. You heard it here first.
30 Jan 2006, 16:14 pm
I wonder what Silent Bobs’ take is on this matter?
I unfortunately tend to agree with bigg on his view that the Spears do not deserve to get a S14 place in next years tournament. It is gonna be bad for SA rugby to have one of the big guns out. As for what happened on Saturday, well welcome to the big league boys, not saying its a good thing, but lets face it – it happens in every game, some games are just more obvious than others.
30 Jan 2006, 16:16 pm
grrrr…sucks neil mckenzie’s nuts!!!
p.s. grrr… we know you done have a brain, never mind a rugby brain.
30 Jan 2006, 16:16 pm
If the Stormers are going to have trouble, what can the Spears expect in the S14?
I have revised my predictions for this years S14.
Stormers to be best SA team. I still believe the Cats will get relegated. But it will be close between them and the Cheetas.
Rednik – you’re hardly the first to make that prediction. There are a lot of mentally challeneged people who frequesnt this site.
30 Jan 2006, 16:18 pm
that should be ‘dont have a brain’
30 Jan 2006, 16:19 pm
geez like the dude sounds pretty pissed off! must say, i don’t know what happened, but i don’t think a coach should be a bloody cry baby! suck it up big boy.
30 Jan 2006, 16:20 pm
Think that P DVilliers is better off worry about his cc prep than worrying about a preseason game with no real value.
Have to say though watched the game on the weekend and one things for sure the guys in the spears side sure play with a hell of a lot of guts when u consider that they are a bunch of youngsters with about 3-4 guys who were first choice cc players last year and they are playing against a stormers squad filled with boks and they were giving the stormers a tough time until the unfortunate binnings i think if they can get a few more experienced players in the squad they can go a long way.
30 Jan 2006, 16:22 pm

Ag, surrup man, jy kannie eers fur bekostig nie!!!
30 Jan 2006, 16:22 pm
LOL munkiboi…
I have to agree with you. the only area lacking in the Stormers squad is the props and flyhalf. I think Naas Olivier would do well if Grant doesnt perform or gets injured…
I just dont hope De Kock gets picked ahead of Bolla or Delport, now that he can kick to goal they probably going to use that as an excuse to keep him in the side…
Bolla ended the season off with a bang and should be the 1st choice.
Moaner is not a top coach judging by his choices he makes… De Kock is not the best 9 in WCape…
30 Jan 2006, 16:23 pm
Nothing new here.
Stormers are prima donnas
Spears are poor.
The sky is blue.
30 Jan 2006, 16:23 pm
Kom buk hie voor my dan wys ek jou ‘fur’ lol
30 Jan 2006, 16:23 pm
Grr
Think that was a joke about the injuries although i see some geniuses actually voted for Dries to play hooker for the bulls LOL
30 Jan 2006, 16:23 pm
St.P
I’d worry bout my teams injuries and lack of a captain if i were you…
30 Jan 2006, 16:24 pm
redox, they can only be thick okes from Tswane. lol
30 Jan 2006, 16:24 pm
As Chuck by die Spears was, sou hulle nie so ver verloor het nie, want Chuck vat nie ‘n PK nie, hy gee Pk’s
30 Jan 2006, 16:25 pm
oh come on okes… i can’t believe this… i was at the game on saturday… the stormers are **** full stop… Peter is spot-on… they played almost their full strength squad and failed to record a point on the scoreboard… first 20 minutes the score was 0-0 and the spears were looking pretty sharp… till they were one man down then the stormers started putting points on board… (thats the team with 10 first team springboks)… playing against a team on no-bodies who have just been together for a few weeks… and you still think spears are no hopers?… jeez okes…
the less said about Peter Grant the better… bring Dollie back to the cape…

30 Jan 2006, 16:38 pm
i was not at the game myself, but i would rather believe an one eyed stormers supporter than some article.
one the question of “if the spears deserve to be there or not?” – again i ask, why does our wooden spoon specialists have more ‘right’ than the spears to be there?
lazybones madea good point, for SUPER 14 squads to score 29 points and 73 points against a 14 man team and a team that only has been together for a few weeks is pathetic.
blood from the ear – and a punch up. then why only one red – surely it should be red both ways and biting????
30 minutes or whatever and no points – pathetic.
grant – another gus in the making since moaner the idiot has made it clear that (no matter how kak he will be) in the super 14 he will be our first choice.
forget what pieter said, a stormers supporter that watched the game said exactly the same thing – the stormers, like most SA teams, are in for a big surprise this year.

No offence just a question i noticed that u dont seem to be able to post an article without mentioning **** , coming out the closet etc.

Yea right! Whatever… And when the stormers were playing the bulls, and wiped them all over trhe wall, then the bulls were the thugs! Wait till the spears get ‘genaai’ by the bulls, and the rest of SA in the curry cup, then SA rugby will be considered as dirty, except of course the EC spears, who are the sweet innocent clean dandylions of the world (with major chips on their shoulders). STOP BEING A MOFFIE PETER, AND START PLAYING RUGBY LIKE THE CHEETAHS DID AGAINST THE BULLS!
rassie never came with any excuses, he did the fucken job!
30 Jan 2006, 16:51 pm
Well Done Markotter
30 Jan 2006, 16:55 pm
ja and rassie had a host of springboks in his team – and established and experience player base and team, money to throw around buying new players, did not have his players ears being bitten,……
sometimes the ignorance astounds me – i wonder what this blog will look like when the spears with a decent sponsor, and some experienced players, whipes their asses with the SA wannabee franchises who has been nothing but an embarrasment for South Africa since the inception of the SANZAR competition.
and no – if anyone is interested i do not support the spears i am a stormers fan – but if they get relegated it might just be the medicine they need to get rid of bloody wannabee coaches and players who survive on past reputations.
