The Lion shunned by Turner’s pride

The Golden Lions have turned their back on Brian van Rooyen, pledging not to support him in the upcoming Saru presidential election.

In an official release, CEO Andy Turner made the following statement:

“At the Special Executive Committee Meeting of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, dated 30 January 2006, the Executive Committee has decided not to support Brian van Rooyen in the upcoming SA Rugby elections as President.

“The Golden Lions Rugby Union Executive Committee will decide which candidate to support as soon as the candidates list is available for the different positions.”

Van Rooyen remains bullish about his prospects of re-election.

    PA,

yes, its true, it would be fairer to read his version of events first, but IMO neither of those guys are the answer. I got the impression that every thing they were involved with, first and foremost, was beneficial to them or their strategically positioned acolites.

The new SA calls for a very different type of person with different priorities and an open and transparent management style. Louis Luyt was probably a good businesman, i.e. in ter,s of making money in SA, but rugby in SA (or any country) is not about money-making or the hording and wielding of power.

Not a big fan of Bacher either. I’d have a rugby chap and straight-talker like Morne du Plessis teamed up with Mike Stofile (hope i’ve got the guy that makes sensbile comments on transformation). The finances should be run and advised by independent accounting professionals, not pseduo-businessmen with their own interests that take the lions share.

For example, look at the TV rights and advertising deals, massive money is involved, but i’m willing to bet that huge bonuses are still funnelled off by our SA “businessmen” involved in these deals, which could instead be used for transformation and resources, where it is really needed. these deals are not rocket science.

People like Stan always say they don’t want politics in Rugby. But now he want Luyt, who, the last time I checked, had his own political party…… I wonder.

Bacher would at least be honest. He’s a proven and competent administrator. Not like the clown that is in power now.

    Cheers

Why the insistence of having YET ANOTHER political animal like Bacher in there? To be honest, I dont see massive transformation or performance in our cricket side either. They have not revolutionised the game – just gone on business as usual. Any old doos can do that -keep things running as they always were…

In practical terms, I’d rather have strife in teh administration, since that way they keep each other on their toes, and nobody does anything bad for fear of being bust. Also that way they are too damn busy fighting to get involved in the game. They say that the Italian economy is so strong because there has been a change of government on average more than once a year since WW2 – they have never been in pwer long enough to make policies at all. Makes you think…

BVR – it’s time to practice what you preach – TRANSFORMATION – Transform yourself into an ex -president or a ***** whichever you prefer

  • 64.cab: Reply to this comment

    methos,

dont know about Bacher, maybe you are correct, but another one that leaves something to be desired.

    wicked weasel,

amusing comment about politicians and the italian economy. Most of them are as you insinuate a complete waste of time. For those reasons, i’d rather have someone with the right motives.

Hell, it cant be that hard. President Wanted: motivated to develop SA rugby above all else, a decent communicator, honest, intelligent, sensible and impartisan.

    PA,

    will do old chap.

Go check Boetas stats in the last few games that he has played. We need a captain and AB de Villiers as the other opener.

And hit 3 sixes and 7 fours.
    87 Runs at 94 balls

Someone told Boeta to bat faster…

    PA,

right, i stand corrected, keep that little gem Boeta exactly where he is, in fact promote him.

As for the article, just read it, not bad and i agree that a mindset change is probably needed, but it strikes me that what is even more fundamental than quotas and all the usual ****** cliches, is the need for money generated by the sport to be developed on the sport itself.

I think there was alot of truth to what Jake White said, which was that if every S12 coach was offered a million rand to develop a number of black players to S12 standard, he would have far more of these players to select from at bok lelvel then whatever was previously contemplated.
