Good news for Bully Boys
31 Jan 2006
Bulls hooker Gary Botha will only miss a third of the Vodacom Super 14 after hurting his knee against the Sharks at Sun City.
Luckily for Botha, scans showed more damage had been done to the medial ligaments than the cruciate ligaments. According to the Bulls doctor Tommy Smook, there is a grade 3 tear to the medial ligaments, but only a grade 1 tear to the cruciate ligaments.
“If the cruciate ligaments were also badly torn then Gary would have been out for six to eight months,” Smook told Beeld newspaper. “Now it’s a case of six or eight weeks and an operation won’t be required.”
The hooker smiled when hearing the news. “It’s not great news because I’m still out, but at least it’s not as bad as it could have been. I’m not going to rush my recovery.”
Botha is the third Bulls captain to be injured during the Super 14 pre-season period. Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer has yet to name his new skipper.

Good news? Are we trying to see the silver lining? We need every Bulls player, every SA player for that matter, to be playing the whole S14! I am seriously doubting the use of these pre-season games.

I say make JP Nel captain….:-)

31 Jan 2006, 08:42 am
In a couple of weeks the Bulls will have lost crucial games and will be out of the running for the semis …..
So sad.
31 Jan 2006, 08:46 am
If the Bulls keep losing front line players, i suspect they are not going to have a good season……
31 Jan 2006, 08:50 am
BlueBlood,
When your boy is back in a couple of weeks, all he’ll tear are his own ligaments.
31 Jan 2006, 09:21 am
BlueBlood sucks kaplan’s titties!!!!
I wonder what the Bulls supporters are going to be like when they dont make the semi’s and finish the S14 below the Stormers…

Good news? How can this be good news?
Good news is when Dan Carter breaks a leg, not when our no2 hooker is out for six weeks!
31 Jan 2006, 10:03 am
nommer 2 stan?
31 Jan 2006, 10:10 am
Stan, whose the bulls 1st choice hooker then?
31 Jan 2006, 10:12 am
i am with you stan – the **** for the two teams i rated to do well for us is suddenly looking bleak – the cats does not have a flyhalf for ****, and the bulls will start the comp with inexperienced second stringers – this is bad.
31 Jan 2006, 10:12 am
he was referring to the bokke i believe
31 Jan 2006, 10:20 am
Nommer 2 in SA.

Dries Scholts is the Bulls first choice. Chilliboy should go to the Lions, behind Scholtz his never going to get game time…
31 Jan 2006, 10:46 am
Dries Scholtz is a centre ! WHo the hell voted for him on the poll ???
31 Jan 2006, 10:52 am

31 Jan 2006, 11:13 am
dries scholtz stan!!!!!!!!
the fan’s choice
31 Jan 2006, 11:15 am
Dries op sy kakste sal waarskynlik beter vaar as die meeste van die potjierolle daar agter die wyngordyn!
31 Jan 2006, 11:16 am
Sad about Matfield and Botha, but I really think Heini Adams would have shown up Fourie in any event. His service is definitely faster than Fouries’ and he does have more than just the standard kick or blind side attempted break. Fourie takes even longer than Joost did in is latter years… and he does not even hassle the rev 1/10th as much as his predecessor did before getting the ball out of the ruck!
What u guys think?
31 Jan 2006, 11:20 am
Ig, on voting, how come that I always have voted already on your polls?
31 Jan 2006, 11:23 am
Howzit Stan
Gee hulle gas broer- veral daai PiepieMier- WyngordynPikkewyn
Hey PA
How about an arti on OORB -seeing that you have so much rain experience recently- on what heyneke & Rassie will do if it rains heavily on 10/2 in Bloem
31 Jan 2006, 11:29 am
OO – think it has to do with your IP
31 Jan 2006, 11:32 am
Hallo OO,
IG- thanks for the feedback
Ok that is understandable
Stan lol
- Daai myn manne kan suip- is Brandboontjie dan ‘n geheelonthouer- of het die Bulle nou ‘n Buddy sisteem?
31 Jan 2006, 12:10 pm
OO,
Ek weet nie of die Brandboontjie drink nie, alhoewel hy waarskynlik so nou en dan n karton tradisionele Magau geniet. Baie gesonder as die goed wat ons drink in elkgeval!
31 Jan 2006, 12:19 pm
Get well soon GB !

Heyneke Meyer should play that young prop who made his debut last season as a hooker against the Cheetahs.A massive front row will go a long way to beating the Cheetahs. The Bulls midfield….if given the ball at speed, could also hurt the Cheetahs.
Van Schoewenburg at lock with Bakkies is a good combo as well.
Cheetahs is the initial test.
Two weeks later vs Brumbies is no contest.
The Bulls locks and backrow will win that.Far to physical at altitude for the Ozzies.
Waratahs included.
Rugby in Sydney is not rugby at Loftus. And the Bulls owe these pretenders a snot klap anyway.I’m backing a full spread of points for those two games.
The Loftus crowd…Mr Hofmeyer included, need to stand up and be counted.
A couple injuries is not catastophic….we all knew injuries would happen at some stage, better to get them out the way now and hopefully have a little more luck later on.
31 Jan 2006, 14:20 pm
StP,
yip and the bulls are the one SA side that can take a few injuries; but its a weaker side without Botha, Matfield or FdP. Still a helluva pack and it sounds like Spies is going to be very useful.
I think the one thing that really seperates the Bulls from the other SA sides is their enforcers and ball carriers (depth at 4 and 7 in particular). Bakkies, Rossouw and Cronje, are arguably the most effective in the country at cqrrying the bqll up and at rucktime, but they can also can turn to players like Gary Botha, Spies and Wanneburg.
For the same reasons tho, i think the sharks will be a different outfit this season. The sharks have done well in signing Farani and the old enforcer AJ returning from injury, this combined with Johan Ackerman and the scrumming of BJ Botha should make a very effective pack, and one where the speed of Tybilika might actually prove useful if the others do their job.
The Cats and Stormers are short of these players with Schalk having to do it all for the stormers (not his true strength) and probably the cats relying heavily on Jannes Labuschagne just back from injury.
31 Jan 2006, 15:58 pm
interesting points you made there St P and Cab…
mmmm… can’t wait for big Joe to come back to action… watch out for the stormers loose trio this S14 season okes when they are all up and running… Luke, Schalk on the flanks… and big Joe at the back… mmmm.. i foresee some fireworks there… its a pity the tight 5 is a bit gayish still…
31 Jan 2006, 17:11 pm
Just think Gary will have his hands full when he comes back…seems as though Chilliboy is being fast-tracked to take over from John Smit. What do you guys think?
31 Jan 2006, 18:22 pm
Parisian,
He is far too young. Meyer will not throw him in the deep end yet.The same as what he did with Spies and DelportChilli needs another 2 years before he can play S14 rugby.
31 Jan 2006, 18:24 pm
Has anybody thought of Bands at Hooker when he is fit. Thats where he started his career(same as Smit whom started at prop) It will be a massive frontrow and not that slow either!
Have your say
