Rees lightning
31 Jan 2006
Comparisons have inevitably been made with Trevor Halstead, but Sharks centre Grant Rees believes he has more to offer than the former Bok.
“Trevor was a great player and I learnt a lot from him when he was with the Sharks,” Rees told keo.co.za. “I am a similar type of player, but I believe I can vary my game a bit more. I rate my passing skills, for example, so I don’t just see myself has someone who can bash it up.”
Rees broke his jaw in a Currie Cup match against the Bulls in 2004, and missed out on selected for the 2005 Super 12. He captained the Wildebeest in the Vodacom Cup, before forcing his way back into the Sharks XV for the Currie Cup season. He’s played 30 matches for the Durbanites (scoring six tries) and is now keen to make his long-awaited Super 14 debut.
“It’s everyone’s dream to play in the Super 14, so I can’t wait to test myself against some of the best players in the world, like Tana Umaga and Dan Carter,” he said. “The only international player I’ve played against, apart from the Boks, is English centre Mike Tindell. But ja, I’ve done well in the Currie Cup and this is the year for me to make the step up to Super 14 rugby.”
The Sharks may not have the flashiest side around this year, but Rees believes they can still score tries against top opposition.
“We’ve got some really talented players in the backline, who are good distributers, so there’s no reason why we can’t do well in the Super 14,” he said.
The Sharks kick off their season against the Chiefs in Durban on 11 February.

hobo,
Agree. That’s one try every 5 games, in the CC. That’s not great. Rate Strauss more than this guy.

“forcing his way back into the Sharks XV”
With their lack of depth, my gran could force her way into the Sharks XV – and she’s dead.

Offside — that comment is “offside” boet.If our depth is so bad then how come the BULLS could not win both games by a mile. And dont give me the story about, these games dont mean a row of beans. The so called main game, was no run away victory for the BULLS, so OFFSIDE, it looks like the SA teams are in for a “long hard season”, not just the SHARKS

At least he has the attitude and bravado. He will fit right in. All talk, not a lot of action maybe.

I reckon that the Sharks will spring a surprise this S14…they have been quietly going on their business while everyone has been writing them off.

Hello guys.
Just a bit of wind-up early in the morning. I suspect you guys are right about it being a long and hard season. Personally I hope that all the Saffa teams do so well that it will be hard, if not impossible to implement the promotion/relegation scheme – at least not without playoffs between the last placed SA S14 team and the Spears.
To Kandas and all the other Spears supporters –
To have a team in the S14 that will allow any opposition to pencil in a win even before playing does not help the “fortress” mentality we need to cultivate. Face it – we battle to play well when playing overseas. We need to ensure that the kiwis and aussies have the same problem – not gift them 5 pointers.

Jeez, at least he doesn’t have an ego…

offside,
90% of our teams are definate 5 pointers for kiwi teams anycase – what is the difference?

Never write off a team that has nothing to lose.
Have your say
