Chiefs scalp another one

Chiefs scalp another one

The Chiefs scraped past the Hurricanes and the Highlanders had too much for the rubble Reds in the last Super 14 hit outs before the tournament proper.

The Chiefs and Hurricanes played most of their All Blacks and there was little to separate the teams. Both scored three tries and just a single point determined the 27-26 win.

In the other trial match the Highlanders raced to a 17-point half-time lead, but then had to work for the 22-14 win.

Scorers: Highlanders 22 (Craig Newby, Nick Evans, Filipo Levi tries; Evans 2 conversions, penalty) bt Reds 14 (Henari Veratau, Sean Hardman tries;
Julian Huxley 2 conversions). Halftime: 17-0.

Chiefs 27 (Sitiveni Sivivatu, Kristian Ormsby, Sione Lauaki tries; Stephen Donald pen, 2 con; Loki Crichton pen, con) bt Hurricanes 26 (Tamati Ellison, penalty try, Lome Fa’atau, Ma’a Nonu tries; David Howell con, Ellison con, Jimmy Goppeth con). Halftime: 17-14.
