Barry fit to claw Cats

Keo.co.za has learnt that De Wet Barry came through training on Tuesday afternoon and will lead the Stormers against the Cats on Saturday.

It’s welcome news for coach Kobus van der Merwe, whose alternative would have seen Werner Greeff moving to the unaccustomed position of 13, leaving him with an extremely inexperienced back three.

Barry will partner Jean de Villiers in the midfield, with De Villiers earlier emphasising the importance of Barry playing.

Van der Merwe concurred.

“Jean and De Wet are a key part of our backline play, and having De Wet there adds a lot of stability to our midfield,” Van der Merwe told keo.co.za. “Getting De Wet back is just massive, in the context of leadership as well as experience.”

Van der Merwe will announce his side at 12h00 tomorrow, but it is no secret that Bolla Conradie and Hanyani Shimange are set to start ahead of close rivals Neil de Kock and Schalk Brits, despite the latter duo making noticable impacts off the bench against the Spears.

“Shimmie is the man in possession. I’m very confident in his ability, and his lineout throwing has been exceptional this week. He only missed one throw against the Spears. Schalk will definitely have a role to play, when he comes on will depend on how loose the game gets.”

“With regards to Neil and Bolla, we’ll probably give them each 40 minutes, with Bolla starting. There’s really not much to choose between them at all.”
