Shimmie starts for Stormers
7 Feb 2006
Schalk Brits will be on the subs bench at his old home ground when the Stormers take on the Cats at Ellis Park this Saturday.
“Splinters” Shimange will get a rare start, although Brits should come on at some stage during the second half.
“My first aim is to prove to Kobus van der Merwe that I deserve the No 2 jersey of the Stormers. I want to show him and the panel that I deserve to be in the starting line-up,” Brits told the Cape Times.
“I also want to prove to the Cats that they have lost a good player, even though they did everything in their power to keep me. I am going to play against old friends, which will be tough. I can’t wait … it’s going to be scary. I know they’re going to come for me, but the best form of defence is attack.”
Meanwhile, Bolla Conradie is expected to wear the No 9 jersey ahead of Neil de Kock, while captain De Wet Barry is 90% sure of being fit for the game.
Possible Stormers team:
15 Werner Greeff, 14 Ryno Benjamin, 13 De Wet Barry, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Peter Grant, 9 Bolla Conradie, 8 Adri Badenhorst, 7 Schalk Burger, 6 Luke Watson, 5 Ross Skeate, 4 Andries Bekker, 3 Eddie Andrews, 2 Hanyani Shimange, 1 JD Moller.

more mense…
this is mistake, like the man (Brits) says he has a point to prove. well give him a proper chance then

Nothing wrong with this team…on Paper! Great speed on the wings – maybe a bit slow at 13. 10 has to prove himself, but tremendous loose trio. Nothing wrong with the locks either!

On paper this must be the weakest Stormers team in a long time. I know Kobus and kie are building a new team, but this looks like a team that even the sharks can take on with confidence. Suddenly the race for relegation is wide open

Where is Gus the gasman? No Stormere team is complete without him.
7 Feb 2006, 08:27 am
Stormers are safe for the mo. Right now, it’s the kitties going downtown.
7 Feb 2006, 08:31 am
Genl…
He’s the secret weapon – he’ll pop out of nowhere and…knock on.
please! no more Gus!

Who will kick? Kreef? Mmmm interesting…
7 Feb 2006, 08:36 am
Pretty decent looking side. The Lions still have the edge in the pack though if you ask me.
7 Feb 2006, 08:39 am
Who the hell is Ryno Benjamin?? Another boland player? What about Chanvanga??
7 Feb 2006, 08:43 am
Bigg. where have u been the last few months?
Benjamin and Nokwe 2 Boland wingers.. the hottest duo in a long time.. wotch dem…
7 Feb 2006, 08:43 am
Bigg
Benjamin is a winger from the boland skillful player was the leading try scorer in the cc last year. Not the quickest wing around but he reads the game well and is an elusive runner.

never thought i’d say this, but dewet’s fitness is vital for the stormer’s success.
kitties are more powerful upfront as StP said though.

Brits is sooooo much better than Shimmie, but I guess you can’t start every game in the S14. So swopping then around is not a bad option….
7 Feb 2006, 08:53 am
Im surprised VDM is not going with Gerber ahead of Watson, what you guys think?
7 Feb 2006, 08:56 am
Well at least Grant has had a season playing behind a pack going backwards….he’s experienced.
Must have been a tough call Spook – Gerber is one of the grafters – besides i don’t rate Watson…he should have stayed at the sharks.
Good to see Bekker and Skeate starting they should grow into a serious lock combo with some time.
7 Feb 2006, 09:06 am
Watson has been great pre-season. Agree he should start. As for the No.2, hopefully Shimmie will soften them up for Schalk to run holes through the Cats in the second half.
7 Feb 2006, 09:06 am
No Luke is da man… Im surprised they not gambling with JDV at Flyhalf…
7 Feb 2006, 09:07 am
Ig
I agree, Watson has done nothing special at Province since moving from the Sharks, i rate Justin Melchk a better player that him.
Who are the locks for the Cats, i know Trever Hall, but is Jannes Labuschagne fit again?
7 Feb 2006, 09:19 am
Lee & Redox, I know about Nokwe but Benjamin?? Well we will just have to see if he is up to Super 14 Standard – I hope he is… Looking forward to seeing Nokwe, cant wait
7 Feb 2006, 09:36 am
Watsons been the stand out player in pre-season. He’ll have a good super 14.
Not sure they’ve got the centre pairing right, but with 13 games to play all combos will have to perform.

I see that the Proteas wilted again. Weak Mutha1!@!#@$. They are a disgrace… not to even be in a final?… jeessh.. Useless bunch of @#!@$.. The Ozziemob must be larfing at our Captain Big *** .. i mean big mouth.. WEAK!!!
7 Feb 2006, 09:43 am
Lee – Jees settle down there bro… I agree that they are bunch of idiots and we all have to realize that the Proteas are NOT a great cricket side, its as simple as that. ALthough we have allot of injuries we are still KUK. Bafana is another topic…
7 Feb 2006, 09:47 am
Sorry Bigg.. just pisses me off endlessly… Ah well now i have rugby to concentrate on.. and in a few weeks will be foaming at the mouth bout the stormers as well.. heheh.
7 Feb 2006, 09:49 am
Cats will target Stormertjies in scrums
7 Feb 2006, 09:55 am
Lee no need to apologize I thought it was funny. I understand your frustration – I was like that too until I accepted that the Proteas are just not good enough. Anyway enough of those pricks.
I am averd Stormers fan and I might just well be foaming at the mouth with you later.
7 Feb 2006, 10:01 am
Bwhahah .. yes Bigg.. especially if Gus the Gasman starts to feauture again.. or if Peter Grant plays kuk.. wich is bound to happen.. or if we supporters get given kuk excuses coz the team play !@!@…
Aah yes.. its that time of year.. super14 is in the air..
7 Feb 2006, 10:07 am
Does anyone know the progress of the Flying Zimbo (Chavhanga)? He must still be injured because I would have him ahead of Bejamin.
7 Feb 2006, 10:08 am
Benjamin*

I ahve already written in my gripe to the UCBSA. They probably wont even read it (although there is also constructive criticism in it) but it makes e feel better to get stuff off my chest.
SA teams need to realise that they need a double A-side to make it through the whole S14. There is no way teh same A-side can play week in and week out all teh way through. Heyneke has teh rght idea, where there should be a seamless ability to slot teh second choice player in.

U are all under rating the stormers tite 5! Ross Skeate is awesome! Eddie, although i dont rate him, is still a regular springbok, shimmie is the second best best hooker in SA (supposedely)! Andries Bekker is pretty good! So i dont think we will be mauled by the kitties!
For those of u who have no faith in luke watson, u are in for a big suprise! He has bulked up amazingly! and has really performed during the pre-season! Backline should run riot as well! Stormers are lookin pretty good to me…
7 Feb 2006, 10:39 am
Probably the most inexperienced Stormers side for a long time. I dont think we’ve even got 10 capped boks starting. There are normally at least that many in the run on team.
Not that its a bad thing. After deStroyli nearly every province had 15 springboks in their run on teams.
7 Feb 2006, 11:05 am
the big question is – will Peter Grant fail where those before him have been doing so consistently for the last few years….
the last time the stormers had a flyhalf to be proud of was Greef’s 1st season in that position.
Since then baby slappers, gaffie and the selfsame greef have all disapointed at various stages.
7 Feb 2006, 11:13 am
This will be the game of the weekend I reckon as per usual Sky are not showing the game
7 Feb 2006, 13:02 pm
I believe Walkwabout & Zulu’s will be showing highlights packages of all the games – probably on Sundays … check it out in the TNT
7 Feb 2006, 17:28 pm
Andrews, Shimanga, Bolla, Benjamin and Nokwe,
That brings the headcount to 5!
The Stormers now can easily swap with the Spears fielding this roster, I failed to get the idea behind it?
Also the detrimental altitude factor in the heat Feb at Ellis Park, has Nick Mallett applied for a government job or something

great player schalk brits, its a shame we lost him.
Have your say
