Poms find their Voyce
8 Feb 2006
Wasps winger Tom Voyce will start for England at fullback against Italy in the Six Nations this weekend.
Nicknamed ‘the eel’ for his slipperiness in the tackle, Voyce replaces Josh Lewsey, who went off midway through the first-half against Wales with a shoulder injury.
Voyce is confident of doing well in a position that is not all that unfamilar to him.
“I played all my U19 and U21 career at fullback,” he told Sapa’s Julian Guyer. “The last time I started at fullback was against Bath in the autumn just before the Samoa game. I think generally I just see the back three role as one.”
Voyce, who has scored three tries in five Tests since making his debut five years ago, said moving to English champions Wasps from Bath and building-up his strength had been vital to his international recall.
“It’s given me a new direction, a brutal honesty on where I have to go forward as an international player,” the 25 year old explained. “[Former Great Rugby league international] Shaun Edwards has given me core skills and made me look at the game in a completely different way.
“Hopefully 10 to 15 caps down the road I’ll be known as an exciting player who can create something out of nothing and also a good try-scorer.”
England coach Andy Robinson said the selection of Voyce was an obvious one to make. “He has the ability to ghost into space and beat players. He’s a very good finisher.”

Die kans dat die Spaghettis die Soapdodgers gaan wen is so goed soos die Stormers se kans om die S14 te wen…Maar ons staan bankvas agter die Romeine….

I am suprised there is such animosty towards all our World Champions. For as rugby world champions they represent every one of us.
Voyce has clearly benefited from the move away from Bath. Where Bath used to be the vanguard of enterprising backline play; perhaps Sale and Wasps have taken over. As fast as a wippett up a drain pipe, Voyce can go off either foot. Great at breaking a line England’s depth of talent in the back 3 is frightening. Its only a shame some of this talent didnt choose to play 12 or 13 all those years ago.

Hate to say it but the poms could play matt stevens at fullback and they would beat those useless italians. Think the problem with the 6nations is that its so dam predictable their are usually only a few competitive games and about once every 10 years u get an upset like the one we saw last week.

Not sure I’m with you Redox. Last year the Welsh stunned France in Paris and beat England at home (which at the time WAS considered a shock). Who honestly can say the 6N has been predictable over the last few seasons?

St M – bad news – your ‘Worldchumps’ only represent arrogant pricks like yourself. Everyone else will be rooting for Italy. Even though the result is a foregone conclusion, we are all hoping for a miracle.
Have your say
