De Waal dropped … for now
9 Feb 2006
Meyer Bosman has been selected at flyhalf ahead of Willem de Waal for the Cheetahs opening Vodacom Super 14 match against the Bulls on Friday night.
Cheetahs coach Rassie Erasmus has opted for the Bok bolter ahead of his Currie Cup-winning No 10, which could see the Free Staters playing a more expansive game against the Bully Boys.
Ironically, Heyneke Meyer has dropped Morne Steyn, who played against De Waal in the Currie Cup final, and gone for Derick Hougaard instead.
Both coaches have found a reason to drop their first-choice 10s, despite them not having played a competitive match since October.
However, Erasmus could start with De Waal if it continues to rain in Bloemfontein.
“I’ve never seen rain like this,” Erasmus told keo.co.za. “It’s been raining hard all week and the rivers are overflowing. If it carries on raining I may start with Willem after all. In saying that, I may decide to keep Meyer at 10. I will make the call on Friday.”
Gaffie du Toit is another high-profile on the Cheetahs bench, with Erasmus keeping faith with Bevin Fortuin.
As expected, Ronnie Cooke and Tiaan Liebenburg make their Super 14 debuts at outside centre and hooker respectively, while Kabamba Floors gets a start in the No 6 jersey.
