Bulls paste Bloem boys

The Vodacom Blue Bulls ensured the early advantage in the battle against the Cheetahs to crunch the boys from Bloem in the Vodacom Cup.

The Bulls won 36-8 after leading 10-nil at halftime. Michael Vlismas writes that the Bulls excelled in the second half and extended their lead via some brilliant sweeping movements resulting in four second-half tries scored by captain and eighthman Derick Kuün, right wing John Mametsa, hooker Harry Vermaas and left wing Trompie Nontshinga.

The opening try of the competition came as early as the ninth minute when lightning-quick Blue Bulls fullback Danwel Demas ran all of 50 metres to score under the poles. The Blue Bulls, despite giving away a hatful of penalties, managed to make the most of their possession and ran riot in the second half. The Cheetahs never looked in the contest and when they did run through the phases contrived to lose possession at crucial stages.

The win signals the Blue Bulls’ intentions to do better than last season’s semi-final appearance when they suffered a surprise loss to the Leopards.
