Scare for Poms in Rome

Scare for Poms in Rome

England trailed Italy 9-7 in Rome after 46 minutes, but kept calm to emerge 31-16 victors and keep their hopes of a Grand Slam alive.

Mike Tindall’s solo effort in the 26th minute looked set to herald the expected English onslaught of points, but 20 minutes later they found themselves two points behind.

Two drop-goals from flyhalf Pez gave the hosts the lead, but 15 minutes later it was back to the script as Charlie Hodgson had added 10 points through a penalty and converted try.

Outside backs Mark Cueto, James Simpson-Daniel and Mirco Bergamasco all dotted down late on.

Hodgson is a purists’ dream. His running lines are an absolute credit to both his natural talent, his hours of dilgent practice, his studious mind and those that have coached him.

This England team operating in only 2nd gear is starting to look like the summer of 2003 version.

Well played Italy a spirited though limited performance.

    Ah StDick

This great english side looks certain to beat the Scots, Irish & perhaps the French. 70% of the time however, they’ll lose to the AB’s. As past holders of the Web Ellis, did you win enough gams after 2003 to qualify?

Mind you, I think the wardens will beat the shackle draggers at rugby, even if they lose their beloved ashes first time around.

Good to see the English team back at full strength with a promising chance at 07 RWC, now they will not have an excuse when AB’s thump the **** out of them at years end. England backs have not played against any world class loose forwards…there time will come.

StMick the only limited team in the 6N is boring England! After the try-fest in Paris this was a big yawn. Hodgson’s idea of creative is punting that big high cross-kick to Cueto or Cohen! Look at the replay and count how many times in that first half the ball went beyond Hodgson!! You won’t need more than 1 hand.

he is almost finished as an int player.

Fastest World Cup holder sliders from No 1 to No 6 in history – what a record to be proud of.
