Boks face Aussies in quarters

The Sevens Boks were shocked by Canada in the USA Sevens, but qualified for the quarter-finals by beating Samoa in their final group match.

Canada performed heroics to build on Brodie Henderson’s early try and shock South Africa 17-12. Shane Thompson’s men then scored their biggest ever IRB Sevens victory over Mexico, 78-7, to guarantee themselves a place in the Cup quarter finals meaning that Samoa and South Africa played off to decide who would join Shane Thompson’s men in the Cup quarter final draw.

Samoa had earlier beaten Canada and took advantage of Mexico’s porous defence for an easy 62-0 win and South Africa beat the Mexicans 78-0, but in the end South Africa and Stefan Basson proved too strong, winning 28-12 and condemning Samoa to a place outside the upper echelons.

“It was a difficult group,” said Stef Basson. “Canada beat us this morning, so we had to beat Samoa in our last game to go through to the Cup quarter finals, which we managed to do. The coach told us to go out there and do the job and we did.

“I decided to play Sevens this year rather than concentrate on fifteens, and i’m pleased with how it’s going. The team is also going really well, second in the lot so things can’t go too much better.”
