Boland crush defending champs

The Cavaliers, Falcons and Wildebeest all began their Vodacom Cup challenge with victories on Saturday. Michael Vlismas reports.

Defending Vodacom Cup champions Griquas got off to the worst possible start losing 40-19 to a powerful Boland side at the Boland Stadium.

With the teams deadlocked at 19-all at half-time, Boland turned on the heat and ran out easy winners with Griquas failing to register a point in the second half.

Right wing Louw Schabort and fullback Ricardo Pietersen each scored a brace as Boland launched their Vodacom Cup campaign with a solid win, picking up a vital bonus point in the process.

Flyhalf Solly Goosen landed five conversions out of six attempts while the man of the match was Boland scrumhalf Charl Blom.

In Saturday’s other matches, the Pumas beat the Leopards 44-25 at Olën Park thanks to a brilliant kicking display by flyhalf Casper Steyn.

Steyn kicked three conversions and six penalties for a personal points tally of 24. The Pumas capitalised on a number of Leopards mistakes and scored an early intercept try, never looking back as they ran out comfortable winners.

At the North West Stadium, the Falcons got their campaign off to a winning start with a 28-22 victory over the Griffons. The score could have been higher for the Falcons if the team’s finishing had been better. They created several opportunities only to lose the ball in the opposition’s 22. Leading 13-10 at halftime, the Griffons will be disappointed with their performance in the lineouts where they lost far too much ball.

At Outeniqua Park, the Wildebeest hammered the Eagles 51-9 after leading 32-9 at half-time. The KwaZulu-Natal side picked up a crucial bonus point away from home and look in fine form, while the Eagles will battle to come back from this heavy defeat.
