Line-out perfection due to Gold
13 Feb 2006
The Stormers’ flawless line-out display on Saturday, which saw 18 takes from 18 on their own throw and four poached from Lukas van Biljon, ensured plentiful first-phase possession and is a tribute to the intensive pre-season coaching effort of Technical Director and line-out specialist Gary Gold.
Gold, who impressed during his stint at London Irish by performing admirably with scant resources, has been operating in the relative shadows since returning to Cape Town.
As assistant to head coach Kobus van der Merwe in the Currie Cup and now in his guise as Technical Director, the spotlight has not fallen on him. Van der Merwe believes, however, that the recognition is long overdue.
“Our lineouts were fantastic on Saturday, we didn’t lose a single one and how often does that happen in the Super 14?” We can be very proud of that effort, particularly Gary [Gold]. He prides himself on the line-outs and it is remarkable that even after the near-perfect display he still wasn’t happy. That says a lot about his professionalism,” Van der Merwe told keo.co.za
Van der Merwe praised both Gold and assistant coach Jerome Paarwater for their work with the forwards.
“Our tight five were very good in Johannesburg and in those conditions our guys really gave the perfect response to everyone who has written them off. They had to stand up and they did, and both Gary and Jerome can be very proud of their efforts.
“No-one is resting on their laurels, though. We know how tough the Waratahs pack will be and we are already hard at work knowing that improvement is necessary.”

Thanks guys,
I know you will work hard to change the light 5 perception.
I loved the Sunday Times headlines in the sports section.
“powderpuff stormers beat woeful cats”
Bring on the tahs, Im nervous as hell though.

snoop,
With all due respect to the Cats, they have not been a measuring rod as to where the Stormers are in reality. The Tah’s will be…I just hope we can pull it off!

I think that the Cats (and me for that matter) underestimated the Stormers “light five” they put on a gutsy performance… good away win!
De wet Barry should tread cautiously… he is picking up where Corne left off… dont need this thuggery!

Bomskok,
I agreed a hundred percent.
The Tahs will test us with a technical pack and farrrrrr less mistakes all round.
Lets hope for 3 things.
1. They are moeg from a HARD game against the REDS.
2.Jet lag
3. Improved showing from the Stormers.
Its a home game for us but look what that did for us last year, sweet F all.
Im reserving until Sat, then we shall see.

18 of 18 is very good but I can’t remember the cats actually contesting one line out on Saturday.

capebull,
I also seem to remember the commentator saying that the Cats are quite happy to defend the lineout and not compete.
13 Feb 2006, 10:23 am
Yep … was at the game .. such a dissapointment .. no competing at lineout time … not being abel to catch, or hold on to the ball .. eish .. it was embarrasing and very dissapointing … going to be a looooong S14

Barbie … your a stomers supporter?
13 Feb 2006, 11:07 am
Paws,
I won’t call myself a ‘supporter’. ‘Fan’ is a better description.
Used to be Stormers, but the’ve been a bit disappointing. Crusaders tickle my fancy now – if I can get my hands on Daniel Carter…

Jorrie Muller was a disaster.. Who would you replace him with?
13 Feb 2006, 11:37 am
jomar1, with esterhuizen or willemse. then jantjes can play at 15 and rose move to 10.
13 Feb 2006, 11:37 am
Barbie … I’m a crusaders fan myself … hahaha, can only think why you would like to get your hands on him, all I know is the he can play rugby
)
Eish … difficult time being a Cats supporter …

Willemse and Jantjes will not be playing the Chiefs. Rose will probably move to Fly-half. I have a feeling that Fourie might go to Full-back and Esterhuizen to centre. That means left wing is vacant. Who would you play…Jorrie Muller, Dewey Swartbooi or even John Daniels?

On a lighter note, the stormer’s fans on this site have a hard enough time trying to convince the rest of the world that their player’s are not ***. Bolla smooching his team mate after scoring does nothing to reduce this perception.

Jees, the Cats were woeful and as a loyal fan, I really worried about them avoiding the chop. That tight 5 needs a wake-up call and Frans needs a plan for that backline. And we need a bloody 10, Frans.
Having said that, the Stormers were not much better. Don’t see them beating the Bulls or Cheetahs and it’ll be a tight one against the Sharks. That Stormers-Cats clash of the weekend was the battle of the relegation suspects.

Paws,
Carter can play ball – so can I…
He’s the perfect 10 – when I’m done with, I’m convinced he’ll rate me a perfect 10 as well
13 Feb 2006, 12:04 pm
Jonnow – THAT kiss, eish!!
Thought I was watching soccer for a sec
13 Feb 2006, 12:09 pm
Hahahaha .. well said Barbie .. and I’m sure you might be the perfect 10 already
)
mmmmm .. just don’t put him under to much pressure, if not given enogh space and time he can be rather .. ordinary ;o)
13 Feb 2006, 12:16 pm
Barbie .. did I say 10 … sorry … you enjoy rugby, appear to have a good understanding of the game … and if 36-24-36 are you sizes … eish … then your atleast a 15 ;o)
13 Feb 2006, 12:24 pm
Can you keep your paws to yourself?
13 Feb 2006, 12:39 pm
Hahaha .. my paws never go anywhere where they are not wanted or where they are not invited ;o)
13 Feb 2006, 14:01 pm
Ah for heavens sake… Get a room!!!
13 Feb 2006, 14:06 pm
