Poms paste Boks and Fiji

Poms paste Boks and Fiji

England crushed the Sevens Boks 40-nil in the semi-final and then were equally as harsh in dealing with Fiji in the final of the IRB World Series in Los Angeles.

England won the final 38-5 against the in-form Fijians on a day in which they showed their best form of the season.

England had earlier produced such a superb display to reach the last match of the piece, Andy Vilk scoring a hat trick as Mike Friday’s men blitzed South Africa 40-0, Tait, Strettle and Gollings also touching down.

The IRB website reports that Fiji, for their part, broke New Zealand hearts in the other Cup semi, William Ryder scoring a sudden death extra time try for a 22-17 win after Tafai Ioasa’s fine effort had drawn Gordon Tietjens’ young side back level at the death. Scant consolation for New Zealand now, but Tietjens will revel in the fact that future stars have been found in the likes of Jane, Raikabula and Pelenise.

The Boks, finalists in the IRB World Series event in Wellington, beat Australia 26-5 after a slow start to the tournament. As in Wellington, where the Boks lost their opening match to Argentina, they also stumbled in LA, losing to Canada. But convincing wins against Mexico (78-0) and Samoa (28-12) put them back on track for a play-off.
