Shock as Ruddock does a runner

Welsh coach Mike Ruddock has resigned for what he cites as personal reasons, only days after his side beat Scotland 28-18 and in the middle of their Six Nations campaign.

Ruddock told www.timesonline.co.uk: “I can confirm I resigned today. It is for family reasons. I would like to thank the Welsh public, players and fans for all their support during my time as coach. It has been an incredible time.”

The hasty decision means that Ruddock’s assistant, Aussie Scott Johnson, takes over the role of head coach until the end of the Six Nations.

Ruddock’s resignation comes just 11 months after he inspired Wales to their first Grand Slam triumph in 27 years.
