Victor Matfield will not play against the Waratahs in Saturday’s Vodacom Super 14 match at Loftus.
Matfield, who injured his knee in a warm-up against the Cats, is training without pain and is technically ready to play. However, the Bulls are wary too rush him back too soon.
“Everybody would like to see him in action, but I think it will be better if he starts playing again in the match against the Highlanders [in Pretoria on 11 March 11],” Bulls doctor Tommy Smook told Beeld. “We’re not playing next weekend, which means Victor will have another two weeks to recover fully.”
Meanwhile, Heyneke Meyer gave an early indication that he would name an unchanged team for the ‘Tahs game.
“The players and I know we lost that match against the Brumbies because the backline defended poorly, but that problem won’t be solved by changing the team,” he said, before defending inside centre Wynand Olivier.
“He is one link in a chain of defenders and it depends on how everyone sticks to the defensive pattern. Wynand has to get the necessary support to fulfil his role.I don’t doubt Wynand’s defence. You can write that he and JP (Nel) will be the centres against the Waratahs.”
