Carel dances to new tune

Carel du Plessis has been appointed to SANZAR’s referees’ panel.

The panel previously consisted of the three Head Referee Selectors from the South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby Unions.

An official SANZAR release explains the expansion as a way of getting another perspective and follows the lead of the IRB and the NZRU which have both had former coaches on their panels in recent years.

The SANZAR panel meets via conference call every Tuesday to review referees’ performances and deliberate on upcoming appointments.

Australian Referees Manager Peter Marshall said the inclusion of Du Plessis would provide important input into the selection process.

“Carel du Plessis has been a Test player, an international coach and a Super 12 coach, so he is eminently qualified to take on this role, Marshall said. “He will bring a new perspective to the selection table and provide valuable input, helping to ensure that we have the best performing referees adjudicating our matches. The appointment of referees is a merit-based system, so having the input of the Super 14 coaches, via Carel, is important.

“Super 14 coaches have always had the opportunity to provide feedback to the Selection Panel, but having a former coach on the panel will certainly assist with that feedback.
