Bands boost for Bulls

Former Bok tighthead prop Richard Bands has been named in the Blue Bulls starting XV for their Vodacom Cup match against the Pumas in Witbank.

Bands played a vital role for the Bulls in last year’s Vodacom Super 12, but missed the entire Currie Cup with a knee injury. He has been on a fitness programme for the last week and hopes to play himself into the Bulls’ Super 14 team for their next match against the Highlanders on 11 March.

Fullback Riaan van der Bergh gets a full game to keep him sharp for the Super 14, while Chiliboy Ralepelle replaces Adriaan Strauss at hooker.

Winger Danwell Demas, midfielders Dries Scholtz and Rudi Coetzee and lock Adriaan Fondse all come in from the Super 14 squad, while winger Marius Delport is on the bench after his return from injury.

Blue Bulls team to play Pumas:

15 Riaan van der Bergh, 14 Trompie Nontshinga, 13 Rudi Coetzee, 12 Dries Scholtz, 11 Danwell Demas, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Neil Powell, 8 Wium Arlow, 7 Derick Kuun (c), 6 Hilton Lobberts, 5 Cliff Milton, 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Richard Bands, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Harry
Vermaas.
Subs: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Ruan Vermeulen, 18 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 19 Gerhard Human, 20 Danie van der Merwe, 21 Joey Mongalo, 22 Marius Delport.

A fit Bands must be good for SA rugby. Fitness and headspace where they need to be – he’s seriously good.

If he’s not number one in his position he’d have to be number two – adding to depth and competition.

Is he tighthead only? Can he play on the other side?

if bands is fit he should make bok team easy. i dont think eddie andrews should make squad, he’s a **** prop, and how many times do u see a penalty for offside, and its him just standing on the wrong side, gets annoying. bulls should be good wen all the big names come back.
