The Natal Wildebeest scored seven tries to one in a 51-19 thrashing of Western Province in the Vodacom Cup at Newlands on Saturday.
The Natalians led 21-13 at half-time, but cut loose after the break.
Springbok captain John Smit marked his return to competitive rugby with a second-half appearance and came through the 40 minutes unscathed, apart from a minor bump to the head. Former Bok scrumhalf Craid Davidson also got 20 minutes at the end, as he looks to fight his way back into the Sharks Vodacom Super 14 squad.
The Wildebeest are unbeaten in the Vodacom Cup this season having beaten the Eagles and Blue Bulls in their first two matches.
No 6 flank Keegan Daniels grabbed a double, while former Boks Adrian Jacobs and Dean Hall both crossed over for tries.
Greg Goosen had another impressive game at fullback, and took over the goal kicking duties when flyhalf Steven Meyer left the field midway through the second half, slotting three from three.
Not even the sin-binning of inside centre Grant Rees, for an armless tackle on a WP attacker, could halt the Wildebeest charge.
WP fullback Gio Aplon scored the home side’s only try, with five penalties from the boot of No 13 Sarel Potgieter preventing total humiliation.
In Potch, the Leopards smashed the Eagles 49-28, after leading 36-13 at half-time. The Eagles have now lost four consecutive matches in the Vodacom Cup and are early favourites for the wooden spoon.
