Jaco ready to storm Super 14

Jaco ready to storm Super 14

Jaco van der Westhuyzen will play in the Vodacom Super 14 as soon as he gets a medical clearance, Springbok coach Jake White confirmed.

White, speaking to Keo.co.za, said that the Japanese-based Bok flyhalf would definitely play the second half of the competition.

“It is very exciting news that he will be available,” said White. “We have to make sure that he is placed in a squad where he will get regular game time that is beneficial to the national cause.”

White said no decision had been made on where Van der Westhuyzen would play, but that it seemed logical to push for his inclusion in the Stormers squad.

“Bolla plays nine and Jean de Villiers plays 12. It would make sense to see Jaco play in that set-up, where he is getting game time with his national teammates. It would help me tremendously if he was playing inside of Jean for a consistent period leading into the national season,” said White, who is hoping to finalise the Van der Westhuyzen situation in the next week.

White, in the past month, has been active in his 2007 World Cup planning. He has conducted workshops with those involved in previous campaigns, regardless of the success of the campaign.

“It is important to get perspective from both sides. We can’t always tap into what worked for a previous squad. We also have to explore why certain things did not work. It was a healthy discussion, but it was only a starting point.

“The World Cup, in many respects, is not won at the World Cup. Successful teams will always take you back 18 months to the planning stages as the basis of their success. I think this is where we have failed ourselves as a nation in previous campaigns. The build-up to the last two World Cups has been dominated by off-the-field issues and disruption. Hopefully, we can get it right in the next 18 months and every decision made in South African rugby is to the benefit of this campaign.

“We need the entire country’s rugby stakeholders pulling for the national cause. The World Cup cannot be won on the basis of input from the national squad and the coaches. It goes beyond that,” said White, who added that he was comfortable the Boks could select 30 players of the highest quality.

“We have depth in our game and a lot of it is playing overseas. The key is to keep them here, but to do that you need a good succession plan in Super 14 and Currie Cup rugby.”

    That’s ok Mikegee,
I was just posting an opinion……I hope that’s ok with the constitution?

Yes. you are right, you don’t post often enough for me to make any informed judgement.Apologies if you have taken offence.

Nonetheless, the rhetoric stands…would you be complaining to the site owners if it were the Afrikaaners being abused?
    I wouldn’t.
So it would be pretty rich to file complaints withregards to other cultures surely?

    Thanks for coming.

Mikegee, piss off you self righteous patronizing tosser.

You and Brendan Venter should get a room. I do however thank you for spicing up the forum. Keep it up.

wow – folks getting a bit tense.

I read and post on this site and I have never been offended by any post – in fact I beleive that it is good to get other folks views as it makes your mind grow wider and become more objective to your own way of thinking. The post yesterday that offend (3rdday I think it was) I thought was very funny but it offend some others (still trying to work that one out!!).

The thing is if you find it so bad just don’t read the post in fact don’t come to the blogg it’s as simple as that – yes some folks posts will generate more response but if they were offended they would not post or come to the blogg again – they would find another place to post. It’s that simple.

wpw, there’s an official quota policy in SA rugby. So quota players exist, and people will mention them. So stop being so sensitive and realise that reverse discrimination exists and that some rugby fans who like to have teams chosen on merit will whinge about it. And will moan about players like Eddie Andrews, Quiton Davids etc. Oh, and slow uncle Paulse.
Oh, before I forget, I hope your local ANC councillor has your interests at heart, but I suspect he doesn’t! Ha ha

Mohawk, what about players like Shaun Sowerby, AJ Venter, Andre Snyman, Willemse and James coming back from injury. Where would they fit in, besides the last two the first three should be garanteed places in either one of those two teams.

wespa531, i live in an area where there are actually more DA councillors than ANC.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this site but it is strange that when an average to good black player is discussed he is a quota but when a guy like Marco Wentzel, Wessel Roux, became Boks nobody moans? Strange isnt it. We have more white players who are **** in SA teams but nothing gets said…

    same **** different day.

for me this is a good thing, you cannot buy experience and come WC time all the names mentioned today can only add to the cause.

someone mentioned jaco being the worst ever bok flyhalf (too lazy to scroll back up now)?

interesting, did we not score more tries with him at 10 (2004) than with AP last year?

  • 109.Ig: Reply to this comment

    Agree PA – and a tri-nations to boot !

  • 110.mikegee: Reply to this comment

Good point about Jaco and tries, PA…

But then, we also managed to score fewer when we started the season with him last year, didn’t we?

I do agree with you, however, that his experience would be invaluable, even if it is only to give some stability to people around him, and to understudies to him in whichever team he finds himself. If it is to be the Stormers, then I think Grant would become a much better distributor if he were willing to take a hint or two from Jaco. He is already a competent goalkicker, and, as someone else remarked (scroll back, or go to whichever thread it was!), he was one of about two players who looked as if he might be able to break the line every now and then.

wpw, I understand your sensitivities but you also need to understand that we should be able to criticise based on performance. Habana is one of my favourite players, (when he’s not trying to intercept the whole time!)but that doesn’t mean that I’m not allowed to say that I think Breytie is past his sell by date. How many times have Marco Wenzel and Wessel Roux played for the Boks, by the way?

    PissAnt
Don’t assume that those tries …
    1) we’re all scored by the backline
    or
    2) with JvdW being involved

How about getting the stats with him being involved with the tries scored?

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying his a bad 10 but I think Jake can do better than him.

Jaco is not that kak but also not briljiant; defense is not good, catches balls only when there is no pressure on him nad he really not a good playmaker.

  • 114.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

    BJ,

i will get the stats for you it is just on another pc.

one thing i can guarrantee you is that although not all tries were scored of first phase possession, almost every one was scored through very slick and quick distribution in the channels 1 and 2, not the intercept tries we have become accustomed to up and till now.

but yes, he is not brilliant in my view as well – but he sure as hell brings a lot more to the party than most on offer currently on display.

wpw, kom nou toe.

Jy sal agterkom dis nogal ‘n nice plek.

Yes he will be a Pearl for us, just need the correct mentor to bring him through the levels

  • 122.Bluecap: Reply to this comment

Pah, I don’t believe for one minute thet Jaco will be playing for the Stormers, With all respect it will do nothing for his game at this stage, he would be better off with the Cheetah’s.

Everytime the man comes back here where is he always seen lurking, Around the Bull pen. No, As much as Jake dislikes the Bulls he will have no choice but to put him there, and that’s mainly cause the player also has a say.
Meyer will take hime in and that’s mainly cause he knows what Jaco can do under him, whereas Van der Merve, well, he doesn’t have a clue either way.

I did not read all the comments but can tell you this, if Jaco is slotted in at 10 in the Stormers team it can either damage his career or lift the stormers. Which one I’m not sure about.

Do not think that because of all the Boks in the stormers backline he will gain a lot. Boys, those stormers/boks are bad this season! They do not look asif rugby is what they wanna play!!
