Rogers adds to potential catastrophe

Rogers adds to potential catastrophe

The Cats will be spared nothing in Sydney on Friday. Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie has picked a star-studded team that should pummel the hapless SA tourists.

While Cats coach Frans Ludeke believes his team is one performance away from turning their season around, a more accurate assessment is that they’re one performance away from ruin.

The Tahs have picked Mat Rogers at flyhalf, which allows the impressive Sam Norton-Knight to remain at fullback.

Returning Wallabies frontrower Matt Dunning can’t make the starting XV and has to be satisfied with a bench warming role.

Victory against the Cats will consolidate the Tahs position as a semi-final contender.

Waratahs team to play the Cats (15-1): Sam Norton-Knight, Peter Hewat, Morgan Turinui, Shaun Berne, Lote Tuqiri, Mat Rogers, Chris Whitaker (capt), David Lyons, Phil Waugh, Wycliff Palu, Daniel Vickerman, Alex Kanaar, Al Baxter, Adam Freier, Benn Robinson. Subs: Tatafu Polota-Nau, Matt Dunning, Will Caldwell, Stephen Hoiles, Brett Sheehan, Daniel Halangahu, Ben Jacobs.

Sigh, life sure ain’t fair. One team is blessed with Mat Rogers the other team is cursed with Tiaan Snyman. What sins have the Cats supporters committed to deserve this punishment.

  • 2.boooi: Reply to this comment

i reckon all tiaan needs is confidence. maybe a couple of years playing club rugby will do him a world of good

  • 3.Rudebud: Reply to this comment

Maybe a couple of years not playing rugby will do Tiaan good. Like 50 years.

bullseye, today I have to disagree with you. I can’t imagine the Cats backline performing with the quite apparent lack of creative coaching. Consequently, I am sad to say, they will go down to the Tahs.

L-Lee, late 80′s played for the old TVL was quicker than Habana but his hands were kakker than Gus’ Coluldn’t tackler either.

L-LEE, I was about 11 years old and very proud about my “Transvaal” rugby jersey, my dad warned me but I insisted on wearing the jersey to Loftus waar dit rof is for a CC game between “TVL” and “NTVL”. Kabous then still played up here for the JHB side.

After a kick onto Kabous by Naas, he fielded well and started sidestepping about 30 metres before he got to the first defender. After he sidestepped about 10 times he eventually got to Johan Heunis (I think) and slipped!

FFS the whole open stand, myself included, just packed up laughing it was hysterical! But boy did they give me kak for the rest of the afternoon, my dad just laughed and said if you dont want to listen you must take it on the chin.

I took my pakslae like a man.

  • 27.katman: Reply to this comment

Cats to take this one with a margin of between 8 and 12. You heard it from Katman.

Has Dunning already served his suspension? One week on the sidelines for him is like an entire off-season. Check the size of him as he waddles on in the 2nd half. Gives a whole new meaning to “bulking up”.

No wonder the Cats and the Lions are doing so kak in the Super 14 and Vodacom cup,the adninstrators in the Lions den and the coaches does not pick the best 15 in the union but sticks with “has beens”. Go and have a look at the club players in the lions and you’ll see the wealth of talent and the smaller union are taking them and performing well while the Lions are too stupid to see it

From a report on Rugby Heaven. You have got to respect this Collins guy!

Only ourselves to blame, says Collins

Hard-hitting and tough-talking. Jerry Collins offered no excuses after the Hurricanes’ 27-25 loss to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein at the weekend.

Instead, he warned his teammates that unless things improved dramatically against the Stormers in Cape Town on Sunday, the Hurricanes could return to New Zealand in a fortnight winless.

“We seriously have to train well or we’ll be looking at three games and three losses – it can easily be that over here,” Collins said of a tour that finishes against the Bulls in Pretoria.

“The Stormers (who were thumped 30-15 by the Highlanders a few hours earlier) will have watched that and will have taken heart from the performance of the Cheetahs.”

While the loss – the first for the season – carried a cost in terms of injury and confidence, it was not catastrophic on the Super 14 table, the Hurricanes slipping to second.

    advertisement – story continues below

The Crusaders lead the competition after they destroyed the Blues 39-10 in Christchurch on Saturday. The Brumbies and Waratahs round out the top four with the Highlanders, who were impressive as they shook off a stomach bug to beat the Stormers.

While there were ample excuses on offer for the Hurricanes, including the loss of Tana Umaga and Piri Weepu to injury, Collins said they really had only themselves to blame.

“At 15 points up we should have put the game away, but we weren’t good enough.”

In fact, the Hurricanes were good enough for at least 60 minutes with tries to hooker Andrew Hore, fullback Shannon Paku and centre Ma’a Nonu helping them to a 25-10 lead, but they imploded from there.

The lineout, which had worked well in the first half with a Luke Andrews steal leading to Paku’s try, suddenly became a shambles as Cheetahs lock Barend Pieterse pilfered three crucial throws.

Elsewhere, poor options were taken, too much ball was turned over, and a ridiculously late tackle by Nonu – for which he was sinbinned – saw the game’s momentum turn the Cheetahs’ way.

They were not helped by referee George Ayoub, who had a shocker in Timaru last week and did not improve in South Africa.

Stand-in skipper Andrew Hore said the problem was Ayoub’s inconsistent rulings, “but it’s always easy to lose and blame the referee”.

“It’s easy to blame the ref but at 25-10 up, there’s no way we should have lost.”

Collins agreed. “We just didn’t play well,” he said.

“The tries we did score were against the run of play and they outplayed us up front. They probably wanted it more.

“They were hungrier than us. I don’t know what went wrong. At halftime we were (eight points) up and we started the second half well.

“Everyone can talk about the travel and altitude, but that had nothing to do with it. We just got beaten by a better team.”

Collins admitted the Hurricanes found Ayoub’s refereeing confusing, but said that was not where the game was lost. “Getting driven back 20 metres tells you a lot about the other team,” Collins said of the Cheetahs’ drive for No 8 Ryno van der Merwe’s match-winning try.

He was also dismissive of the impact the changes to the team had, with Thomas Waldrom starting at No 8, Tane Tu’ipulotu replacing Umaga in the 16th minute, and Weepu off in the 67th.

“The guys that come in have to step up. It’s the school of hard knocks and you have to learn on the job. You can’t afford to have guys having a three-game warmup before they get used to it.”
