Tondi targets Cheetahs comeback

Tonderai Chavhanga narrowly missed selection for the Stormers’ clash with the Hurricanes on Saturday, but will be fit to face the Cheetahs next weekend.

Speaking to keo.co.za, the one-cap Bok confirmed that he could have played this weekend, but the strains of Vodacom Super 14 were deemed too risky so early in his recovery.

“I’m so close to being there, obviously I’m chomping at the bit and this is very frustrating,” Chavhanga said. “I was advised by the doc to sit out one more week to ensure that there’s not more setbacks, so in conjunction with the coaches I’ve made the call to wait one more week.”

Chavhanga confirmed he is targetting a return against the Cheetahs.

“I’d love to play against the Cheetahs, but obviously that is the coaches’ call. I will be available for selection though.”

Chavhanga has been out since the preliminary stages of the Currie Cup, and was forced to miss the Boks’ end-of-year-tour with a persistent quad injury that flared up again pre-season.

    From thestormers.co.za:

Gus Theron – Please read this – you are a disgrace to the game called rugby. F-off peacefully from Newlands or face the music. A tackle is spreading your arms around an opposition players legs/waist so that he falls to the ground. Use it don’t lose it. – Posted By – [WP OU] – 8 March, 2006 13:41

    L-Lee,

Gus does tackle – the problem he has got is catching the ball – think you guys need to watch the games a bit beter and not from the bottom of glass that hold the ‘Klippies and Cokes’. Please don’t get me wrong not a fan of Gus but he does have some strong pionts and a few other weak pionts. I think you need to list all the players positions put down what player skills are needed and then rate the players in the positions against your list and you may be surprised at the outcome – some ‘afrimate players’ will rate much better than people give them credit for and some wonder player like ‘Schalk Burger’ will be rated down. You need to be more objective when just slagging players off.

I waslucky as in my playing days played in both back line and forwards and have a better knowledge of some positions which has been a good thing for me to look at players and how to rate them. One player that always got a good score from me was Pieter Rossouw – many for his ‘off the ball play’. The support and covering this player did was about 2-3 times more than any other player. So look at players stong pionts and weak pionts before just slagging them off.

all stormers, strong points and Gus in the same sentence is like using the word intelligent and bulls supporters in the same sentence…They just dont go together.

I agree to a piont (as not a Gus fan), but folks are now just slagging him off when if fact he is not that bad – think in last two games has only ‘dropped’ the ball twice. made two mis-tackles and gave away one pen for pull a player back (which cost us 3 pionts). That rate of erro is not bad as some other players have done worse but because it is known he drops the ball on a regular basis he is getting all the flack when in fact it should be some of the ‘wonder boys’. If they up’d there game there would be a difference as this is a team game and currently they are not playing as a team but one player making a dart not and then. Maybe Bolla should go an kiss player when they make mistakes!!

    all stormers….

have you been to newlands when gus was in the team? He is ****, finished and klaar…

How can WP keep a player who cant catch the ball? I watched the game closely and i can tell you that he was running around like a headless chicken too. he is not even CC material…

Even in the Warm up games for the Strmrs, he continously drops the freakin ball, i’ve even seen him drop it with just the tryline in front of him… And the sad thing is, not on only a few occasions but many…

Yes I used to go to Newlands all the time (had Season tickets) and only this year move to the UK. Yes he is is not the best player and really think that a another player should be given a chance – however he can tackle which is more than likely the reason he gets the nod over some other players. However if your teams has the ball this is not a big factor and can play someone who is good with ball in hand.

If you look at last game both Adri and Ryno dropped the ball with open line too – but they not getting half the flak Gus is. We all know he is never going to be a top class player as he has a ‘few’ things he needs to work on more than otehr players – but think he is also over the hill to make it big so it may be better for another player to be given a chance. The problem is they don’t have anyone else as they were not expecting all the centre’s to be out at the same time. So again this is a mangement problem not a player problem as he is playing the best he ever will be which we all know is not brilliant.

At least a stormer with some perspective. Some idiots here just jumps on the ‘Gus is K@k’ bandwagon, while he is most probably not the worst player in that team by far. Specially the way they are playing at this stage.
Similarly if a player does one good thing like a 50/50 chip and chase and get the lucky bounce of the ball then he is the next best thing.
Like you said you got to look at the overall performance in relation to the rest of the team.

    I support all_stormer opinion
You go to war with what you’ve got, the Stormers conceded too many soft tries this season and they need few committed hard men at the back
Please name someone other than Gus and DwB

Thanks guys – I am very dissapiont with the Stormers so far but still remain a fan and maybe I am more critical at looking at the team performance rather than just one person – as one per does not make a team. For this reason I don’t think that JdV will suddenly turn the performance around – he will help but each team memeber needs to up their game before they will start to do well – they don’t even look like they want to play out there so it’s no surprise that it’s the new boys (Ross Seakte and Schalk Britz) that are giving good performence in relation to the rest of the team.

Just been looking at the stats on the Stormers game played against Brumbies on sarugby.com and it shows Gus made more tackles than other backline players in this game(they got him down as a wing and Rayno as full back but just do compare of all players for that game). It does not however show how many balls were not caught. Which confirms why he is in the team so before shouting “GUS is K@K” get the facts!!

I am not sure how all the sites get there stats and they all seem to be done differently so I only use these as a guideline. The NZ site tend to favour their players and likewise the SA sites the SA players. But like I said in an earlier post make a ‘checklist’ for yourself as to what makes a good player in that position – and then rate the players as per your checklist. You will be shocked at some results.

Also look at Schalk Burgers stats for this game and Schalk Britz – the hooker made far more tackles – this is shocking. I have never been a Burger fan and the more stats I see confirms he is just overrated – a good player but overrated.

    all-stormers,

So afgerig of gameplan???

Almal get gedink hulle so die wedstryd verloor.
