Fester can sleep easy

WP director of rugby Nick Mallett couldn’t coach the Stormers this year, even if he wanted to.

According to Die Burger, a verbal agreement with the president of the French club Stade Francais, where he coached for two years, prevents Mallett from coaching anywhere in the world until the end of 2007 – when his contract would have expired.

“After my stay in France, I wanted to return to South Africa to see my children finish their schooling,” Mallett told the newspaper. “My contract in France expires only in 2007, but they agreed that I could leave early.

“The president told me, however, he didn’t want me to coach professional teams anywhere else.

“My job is to work out all aspects of the game and to assist Kobus (Van der Merwe, the Stormers coach) and the other personnel.

“I perform an advisory and supporting role and cannot take over the coaching. That is Kobus’s job.”

Why would a president from a French club not want him to coach a regional side in South Africa, but allow him to be the “Director of Rugby”. I’m sure if he asked nicely the president wouldn’t mind. I think something fishy is going on, or he just doesn’t want to coach.

    I disagree

IF…..Nick had to step in and coach Province, he would make a difference. Look what **** is doing with Natal [What Putt couldn't do]. If any of you read Rob v/d Valk’s book about Nick, you would have heard how Nick took a Club side in CT [Not sure which club]from Nowhere to win the league I think. **** Muir took Pirates [In JHB] from nowhere to win the National Club Champs. The following year he took Tukkies from nowhere to win the National club champs.
A great coach like Nick CAN make a huge difference to any side.

My only question is why does the coach have to make deference, what happened to playing for pride?? The player’s should take some responsibility and step up to the plate. I mean the whole backline of WP is in the Springbok team??

  • 10.Craig Goosen: Reply to this comment

    Hobo

I agree 110%, the players HAVE TO take responsibility, but a good coach DOES help a side as well.

  • 11.Charlie: Reply to this comment

    Hobo

If the whole backline of WP is in the Springbok team then it get’s quite scary to think about the Tri Nations and World Cup 2007…

  • 12.Werner: Reply to this comment

I think Nick can make a huge difference. Remember, he’s got all the experience in the world, and he’s been there and done that. You can’t blame it all on the players just like you can’t blame it all on the coach.

If the coach want the players to play a certain game plan, but the players don’t buy into it, you’ve got some problems. But even if a coach has got the best ideas, but on match day the players can’t tackle and can’t catch, it’s not his fault.

Don’t get me wrong! I don’t rate Kobus at all, but we’re stuck with him. Any coach who keeps on selecting Gus Theron is useless. Aspecially if you have someone like Egon Seconds playing Vodacom Cup.

But if I was a player I would rather put my body on the line for Nick Mallet than for Kobus.

Botton line, we’re stuck with Kobus. He and the players need to pull finger and start delivering.

    My 2 cents…

  • 13.Werner: Reply to this comment

Charlie, don’t worry about that, people said that for the last two years, that just shows you what a difference a really good coach makes.

  • 14.Charlie: Reply to this comment

    Werner

I can tell you that Nick Mallett is the one sitting behind the Gus Theron situation because Mallett does not have a liking in Egon Seconds as well as what happened in the past with Breyton Paulse…Mallett told Egon Seconds that he won’t be playing Super 14 Rugby, so what does that tell you…I don’t think Mallett will make a difference because the Stormer players are just not up for what Super 14 Rugby expects from them at the moment…

    Werner

So what you saying is that you can dish up **** for your regional or provicial team and still be selected as a Springbok because the coach will fix that…I think it is very unfair towards other players that are consistant each week but never gets the oppertunity on a higher level…

Nick is a good coach , i think he would have made a difference to the team. But as he also said we must give time , things doesn’t change overnight. I know alot of supporters are not very happy at the moment. Look at the Bulls , they also had a couple of bad years behind them before they became a good team again. It was hard work and they made it. Stomers will not come right in one year , more likely in 3 years time. But if they realy wanne play rugby they will improve there game soon otherewise alot of them will loose there places in the springbok team. We already see what Jake is doing ,getting players back from overseas again.

  • 17.Werner: Reply to this comment

Charlie if that is true, then it’s even worse off at Newlands than I thought. But I mean, even if he don’t like Egon, for **** sakes, anyone is better than Gus. Anyway, the thing with Nick is that he is so pationate about the game, if you talk to him you can just see how much he love the game, but at the moment there is seriously big time stuff wrong there.

I just don’t hope there is more that 5 000 supporters (or should I say spectators) at Newlands on Saturday.

    Craig,

Quite a few valid points but I dont think it is fair to say Tukkies and Pirates were ‘nowhere’.

But yes he did very-very well with both sides.

Look at Boots and All last night.
Scotland have the same 15 people as they had last year. So why are they competative now? New coach.
A coach has a huge influence on players
Why is it JW can make the Stormers backline into world beaters and yet KVM makes them inot the laughing stock of world rugby?

    Neil: Neil de Kock speaking
Rayno: Hi Neil; it’s Rayno Benjamin speaking.
Nei: Hi Rayno ! How you doing mate ?
    Rayno: No good; can’t complain.
Neil: And how’s the family doing ?
    Rayno: Good thank you.
Neil: Good to hear that !
Rayno: Listen Neil, the reason why i’m phoning: I am standing here on the wing. Can you please pass the ball sometime ?

  • 25.koningsblou: Reply to this comment

    Stan

    Stan… jy is n d00s.

The Stormers are a team with no confidence, simple.

If most of the province backs are good enough to be Boks and win a tri-nations (albeit narrowly) yet they cant perform for their province
then it is the coach. Simple.

It might be that Jake can take an ordinary player and make him play above himself whereas Fester is unable to do the same.

It makes little difference how talented a player is at the end of the day if the game plan and tactics implemented by the coach doesnt suit the player… or even worse if the players dont agree with the game plan. Which is what seems to be happening at the Stormers.

My question is this… if at half time you have realised you are unable to catch the ball at the lineouts and you cant string two passes together why play expansively and why kick so much?

The only other option open to the Stormers during the match in the above scenario is to use the forwards more but IMHO I think the stormers believe the press and dont rate their own tight five. They have no confidence so they have no plan B.

Surely the coach is supposed to create a confident vibe in the camp?

Ek dink Mallet sal moerse verskil maak.

    What!! are you drunk?

  • 32.Drunkmonkey: Reply to this comment

You right let the stormers …storm some more off the field with boooooo from there crowd.
I love it …. that mostly why i watch stormers game its a great comedy.

How do you confuse a stormer: give him the ball with open tryline …. he will be so confused he knock the ball.

  • 33.TigerShark: Reply to this comment

    Shosoloza

Ash Everit.

Hy is a jong mannetjie, 28 jaar oud dink ek.

    TigerShark,

yes he is coming thru the ranks and he has a great mentor.

    Drunkmonkey,

or he will relax after he crossed the tryline and get tackled from behind only to loose the ball…….. like you said, great comedy

The Cats are getting knobbed!! The Stormers do have hope, they can never play as terribly as the cats. Can they?

    Cats to be relegated.

yeah still early to say what going for what …. but stormers playing at home …. u think they gonna get better when they travel and playing like this?

the public is angry cos they know the stormers can play much better…. its almost like there is no spark. The players just going threw the motions.Thats what missing from the stormers that electric spark….. i say run on the field an give them all a electric shock some vooma

  • 39.TigerShark: Reply to this comment

    Cats get a cricket score.

So, by how much would the Spares lose next year if they play? Surely even with their no name brand team they can still do at least as eaualy bad as the Calamity Cats?

Whats worse I think they Cats have the worst ever S12 / S14 record. Lets get rid of them and give the Spares a 10 year chance to at least equal the cats mediocrity.

  • 40.thusom: Reply to this comment

If there is a form of restraint of trade why then he cannot play an advisory role to the Stormers coach. The president (France) won’t even see him.

  • 42.leeanthonyw: Reply to this comment

This is an idiotic statement, but i wonder what would have happened in RWC2003 if Mallet had come in to do a hospital job?
However the man is a rugby genius, why did we have to go thru 2 **** coaches to get to White?
A coach makes all the difference, a coach can turn under performing players into champions!!!
I hope for the RWC2007, they get Mallet on board for the world cup. Do White and Mallet have any kind a relationship?

  • 43.Cubiczirconia: Reply to this comment

Mallet and White do not have a relationship that would be conducive to productive results – Jake was Mallets technical analyst in 1997 / 1998 and was let go before the 1999 season (I think) … the results after that speak for themselves as Nick tried in vain to play Brumbies / Aussie phase rugby with light weight forwards …
