Green light for Jean

Jean de Villiers will start in jersey 12 for the Stormers in their Vodacom Super 14 encounter with the Hurricanes.

Coach Kobus van der Merwe confirmed to that De Villiers, who has had to pull out on three successive Fridays, will be able to start tomorrow’s crunch fixture for the Cape side.

“Jean hasn’t needed a fitness test,” Van der Merwe said. “He’s trained with the team the whole week, and if he comes through the captain’s practise later – and I have no reason to think he won’t – he’ll definitely be in the side tomorrow.”

Van der Merwe was equally bullish about the prospects of second rower Andries Bekker.

“It looks good for Andries as well, which is very good news for us.”

It means that, for the first time this year, the Stormers will field a first-choice side in its entirity.

Tonderai Chavhanga is the sole remaining squad member on the injury list, and he is due to be available for selection next week.

“I’m extremely happy with how the guys have responded to the disappointing display last weekend,” Van der Merwe said. “There’s a great buzz in the side and I’m confident we’ll turn it round tomorrow.”

Nick Mallett’s typically blunt and forthright video session, including a patented hairdryer treatment for underperfoming Boks such as Schalk Burger and De Wet Barry, was well publicised during the week.

“I think it’s nice for the players to hear a different voice. I asked Nick to be at the video session on Monday, and he was happy to oblige. His experience is invaluable and its important for the director of rugby to be involved with the side.”
