Scots get sucker punch

Scotland’s Six Nations dreams were shattered when they lost 15-9 to Ireland in torrid conditions at Lansdowne Road on Saturday.

The Scots, who shocked big boys France and England earlier in the tournament, are now out of contention for Europe’s greatest prize, while Ireland still have a mathematical chance of finishing first.

The Dublin match was played in appalling conditions, and in the end it was five penalties from the boot of Ronan O’Gara that sunk the Scots, who managed just three from fullback Chris Paterson.

It now seems likely that the winner of the France-England Test in Paris on Sunday will become the new Six Nations champions.
