Luke Watson or Jean de Villiers will captain the sinking Stormers ship against the Cheetahs in Saturday’s Vodacom Super 14 match at Newlands.
Under-fire Stormers coach Fester van der Merwe is considering resting captain De Wet Barry for the game, and partnering Jean de Villiers and Marius Joubert in midfield. Either Jongi Nokwe or ‘The Gas Man’ Theron could take Joubert’s spot on the wing.
In other possible changes, Neil de Kock may come in for Bolla Conradie, with Chumani Booi replacing the injured Werner Greeff at fullback. Justin Melck could also get a rare start, with Schalk Burger taking a break.
“We are not finishing well,” admitted Fester after the crushing last-minute defeat to the Hurricanes. “We spent 30 minutes in their 22m area and only had nine points to show for it.”
Fester conceded that the team’s defensive effort was unacceptable for the second week running.
“It is definitely something we will have to look at. Nick Mallett said afterwards that we are being cut in midfield too often. We will have to go and look at the cause,” he said.
The Stormers have yet to win a match at home this season, having lost three out of their four Newlands fixtures. After playing the Cheetahs on Saturday they head overseas, where they’ll take on the Force, Blues Chiefs and Reds.
