Peter Grant was the villain at the Stormers Monday video session, with his poor decision-making seen as the most significant factor in the 23-19 Vodacom Super 14 defeat against the Hurricanes.
Grant missed the first tackle on Hosea Gear in the last minute, one of four to be missed as the Hurricanes winger stayed on his feet for 40 metres to avoid four Stormers tacklers and the touchline and score the winning try.
Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe told Die Burger’s Herbert Pretorius that Grant had been singled out for kicking away the ball in the last few minutes, when the game plan was to keep it in hand.
“We had a scrum and the decision was that Peter should cut past Jean and the ball then had to be taken up by the forwards. They had to take the ball through several phases till the final whistle sounded. Peter however decided to do something else and it cost us dearly. He immediately acknowledged his mistake on Monday, but he was nevertheless chastised severely.”
Van der Merwe also pointed out that Werner Greeff’s substitution was down to injury and not tactical. Van der Merwe was criticised by me for making the call, if it was tactical. As it was not, my apologies for offending his sensibilities.
Greeff subsequently has been ruled out of the Super 14 because of neck injury.
