It’s official: Snyman’s coming home

Following revelations a week ago on keo.co.za that Jake White was interested in recalling Andre Snyman to the Springbok squad, the Leeds Tykes winger has today signed a Bok contract.

Saru manager of teams Andy Marinos has confirmed that Snyman has signed a six month contract with the Boks.

He will return to South Africa following the conclusion of Leeds’ Premiership campaign.

“When I came to Leeds it was a great opportunity to come and experience another country and way of life. I have had three awesome seasons with the Tykes and had intended to sign a new contract and finish with my career at Headingley Carnegie. However, this is an opportunity which is too good to turn down,” Snyman said.

“At the Tykes, I have been able to express myself and my form here has given me this opportunity and hopefully I can make the most of it. I hope I can add value to the Springboks team and make the final World Cup squad.

“I have had a great experience in Leeds and would like to say a big thank you to everyone at the club for their support over the past three seasons. I’m glad to have got this sorted now so I can concentrate on the next five games for Leeds and finishing my time here in the best possible manner. Until the final game of the season, all I am concentrating on is getting Leeds as far as possible up the table.”

Director of Rugby Phil Davies added, “This is a great opportunity for Andre and one that we fully understand he has to take. We will wish him well at the end of the season and thank him for his outstanding service to the club and we would gladly welcome him back if the opportunity arose. I am sure that Andre will be totally committed to the Tykes cause for the remainder of the season and finishing off what has been a great year for him in terms of his own personal form.”

Could be. He reminds me of Henno Mentz.Bash m up.
Cant remember his hands though, henno’s bad.
Wonder if Andre is as fast as he use to be.

  • 10.tsiko: Reply to this comment

Carcass, with all due respect, if you compare AS to HM you know very little about backline play.

  • 11.bliksem: Reply to this comment

    tsiko please explain your statement.

    Tsiko
What you mean? Snyman wasnt a playmaker. Just fast, strong = Mentz

  • 13.The King: Reply to this comment

Andre Snyman is a world great compared to Mentz

  • 14.The King: Reply to this comment

    Carcass

Since when is henno Mentz strong ?

  • 15.carcass: Reply to this comment

    King
He has shown his power on many times,he is quite a handful at pace, that is if he catches the ball.

  • 16.Creed: Reply to this comment

Snyman is a centre turned wing. Good hands, good eye for a gap, brilliant on defence and to top it off, strong and fast.

Mentz is a wing that will never ever make it as a centre. Does not have an eye for a gap, no hands to speak of, can’t defend. All he has is speed and size

Plainly put, Snyman was brilliant. Scored some great trys as well. To compare him to Mentz is an insult.

  • 17.tsiko: Reply to this comment

AS would have been a great had it not been for the injuries. Although he is/was not a playmaker in the Michael du P/**** Muir mold, he is a lot more creative than HM. He is strong, fast, operates well in small spaces and has much better hands than HM.

HM is daft. Eager but daft. Can you imagine HM as Springbok centre?

AS certainly (still) has a lot more to offer than HM.

  • 18.Sage: Reply to this comment

Mentz and Snyman are worlds apart as players.

The Snyman of old could take on and beat a man one on one with a jinx, swerve, sidestep or change of pace. He seldom squandered possession with a speculative kick.

He could also read the game well and knew how to take a gap. And he could tackle – hard. He was a classic centre.

Mentz is quick but has nowhere near the same talent. His idea of beating a man is straight ahead or a 50/50 chip n chase. No comparison.

  • 19.carcass: Reply to this comment

No argument, AS is better by far than HM. We did not see enough of AS to call him a world great.

Im not so sure of Snymans handling.

  • 20.cab: Reply to this comment

Snyman is a great player, but he is also 32 years old, 1 or 2 seasons max as a backline player.

    boylouw,
    wat steel hy?

  • 22.Bluecap: Reply to this comment

Mentz’s brother, MJ is in my opinion a better player than him, tackled the **** into him in one game I watched, stopped Henno gettin a try too.

  • 51.ratel: Reply to this comment

I remember Snyman was always very predictable.
He can’t really pass left or right so he just tucks the ball under his arm and storms into the opponents. Works well at lesser levels, but at international level everyone has strenght and pace.

  • 52.RedCard: Reply to this comment

Ratel, everyone except the bok backline ;-)

  • 53.pierre: Reply to this comment

I am tempted to say something like, “Everyone will remember this as the day Jake lost the plot”. But that would be melodramatic. Jake has made dumb-assed selections before (Jacques Cronje, Danie Rossouw at flank, Gerrie Brits, Jean Div at inside centre) but he usually learns from his mistakes – that’s the difference between him and Straeuli.

Still waiting for him to figure out that JdV is an outside back, though.

  • 54.Dieselboys: Reply to this comment

    Pierre
JDV has got skills that are wasted on the outside especailly when its the type of game where balls going out wide are few and far between. The same arguement applies to Habenero. Bring them closer to the action so that they can make a bigger impact. We have more than enough wings. Amongst the inside backs is where the problem lies.

  • 55.pierre: Reply to this comment

    Dieselboy –

JdV on the wing = loads of tries and superb finishing ability.

JdV at inside centre = a guy who constantly talks about how much better he is at inside centre, while nevertheless missing plenty of tackles, breaking the line maybe once every two games, allowing himself to be pressurised by opposing defences and throwing desperation passes, sometimes conceding turnovers, some of which lead to tries, and generally failing to dominate the channel or create anything for his outside backs. Please don’t bother referring to that one try-creating pass he gave Jaque in the last Tri-Nations. As I said, one line-break every two games ain’t good enough.

We have a serious problem at no. 12 in this country, especially with De Wet out of form. Julies is the only option, but it’s hard to pick anyone from the Cats, they suck so bad.

  • 56.Dieselboys: Reply to this comment

    Pierre
I think we differ on what a 12 should bring to the party. My thoughts on JDV are more a response to the lack of creativity amongst the inside backs. If its any compromise maybe he should play 13. That is where he made his first impression a few seasons ago. I agree that the ball retention and passing of a Julies is more useful. But then you need a creative 10 inside him (brokeback again) and a finisher like Habenero or JDV outside of him.

  • 57.Dieselboys: Reply to this comment

I hope Jake intends that Snyman plays on the wing. I dont think he’s the answer at 13.

    10. Jaco/Hougaard
    11. Snyman
    12. JDV (Sorry Pierre)
    13. Habenero
    14. Jacque Fourie

  • 58.Stan: Reply to this comment

    10 Hougaard
    11 Snyman/habana
    12 JDV
    13 JF
    14 Habana/Snyman
    15 Roets.

  • 59.pierre: Reply to this comment

Suppose I should put my two cents’ worth in aswell then:

    9. Ricky/Ruan
    10. Jaco
    11. JdV
    12. Wayne
    13. Jaque (with Marius contending for this spot when his fitness improves)
    14. Habanero
    15. Percy

although I am not averse to your idea of playing Jaque on the wing, Diesel.

  • 60.Dieselboys: Reply to this comment

    10. Jaco/Hougaard
    11. Snyman
    12. JDV
    13. Habenero
    14. Fourie
    15. Jantjes (if fit)

Percy should be rested alot this year, along with Os.

  • 62.Hobbo: Reply to this comment

Diesel…. got to agree with you on the JDV issue. He is definately an inside centre and not an outside back. Him and Habana as a centre pairing would be very interesting. Although Habana has totally made 11 his own and is a brilliant wing. My backline:
    10. Jaco/Pretorius
    11. Habana
    12. JDV
    13. Fourie
    14. Snyman
    15. Percy

  • 63.Dieselboys: Reply to this comment

My felings are that the Habenero is an outside centre. Just look how often the Bulls waste him on the wing? Last week he only got the ball on the fly once! He needs to come closer to the action. Its like the Canes playing Nonu on the wing. Itsa waste. Habenero can tackle like the best of them so please dont say he’s defence is swak. He would be devastating at 13 and make the Bulls lot more potent in the backs. I think he has creativity that the Boks/Bulls have bot drawn on enough. I saw it in him when he played centre for the Lions.

  • 64.Hobbo: Reply to this comment

Diesel, agreed. He would be an awesome centre as his defense is very strong. I’ve seen him put in some huge hits this season. He is being wasted on the wing for the bulls but for the Boks he is such a brilliant left winger. Bit of a tough decision, do you move him to outside centre for the bulls and then play him on the wing for the boks. Jake wants his players to play in one position. What do you think?

  • 65.pierre: Reply to this comment

Guys, you’ve avoiding the issue. We have plenty of great outside backs. We are, however, deficient in the 10/12 channel. The tries have all but dried up since Jean took over at inside centre from Barry/Julies.

  • 66.StMichel: Reply to this comment

I say I really am a fan of Snyman. Before his injuries he had real potential. Perhaps his 3 years in England (and he has impressed in that time) has turned him inot both a test class rugby player and more importantly a gentlemen. Good move Mr White.

  • 67.shaka mehlomakulu: Reply to this comment

Has to be a better bet than the carthorse Julies

  • 68.cab: Reply to this comment

if they’ve turned him into a gentleman like Grewcock, Healy, Dawson, i’m not sure its such a good idea to have him back, perhaps we can setup a finishing school so that he can learn the grace and fairplay of Bakkies “Angelface” Botha.
