Boks crash out of Commonwealth Games

The Sevens Boks Commonwealth dream is over.
Host nation Australia, boosted by stars Chris Latham, Loti Tuqiri, Matt Giteau and Scott Fava, beat the Boks 20-14 in the quarter-finals and will now play New Zealand in the first semi-final.
The Aussies, scoring four tries to two, lead 10-7 at halftime.
The defending champions New Zealand beat Canada 24-0.
England and Fiji play in the other semi-final after England snatched a last minute win against Samoa. The latter lead 14-12 with just second remaining, but England international Matthew Tait scored his third try of the match to give the pre-games favourites a 17-14 win.
Fiji, after initially struggling to subdue Wales, won 26-7.
There was small consolation for the Boks, who held off a Canadian fight back to win through to the Plate final 17-14.
In the Plate final South Africa lost to Wales 29-28.

with chris latham injured and possibly matt gittau as well, i think it is a good thing that we didn’t send our big guns. besides, there are guys that play sevens whole year round; they deserve to get a go at the games.

Its not like the Aus guys had to fly a long distance to get to the games! That is the benefit of having the games at home, nothing wrong for SA to send the guys doing the hard yards throughout the season.

Very true, how can we expect to compete by sending a quota team to the common wealth. I wonder how many years it will take before we can start playing people on MERIT only. A team is as strong as its weakest link, and usually our weakest links are the quota links.
And on the other hand you get quota players that are the best in their position, but they are still quota players. Like Bryan bannanna, the best wing in SA on merit.

These are the same players who do well throughout the rest of the sevens circuit. Its easy now to call them quotas isnt it. The Aussies won because they could afford to stack their team with Super 12 players – I counted Brendan Williams, Luke Inman, Tuqiri, Latham, Giteau and Fava amongst their players – all players that have played at Super 12 level

Nothing on God’s whole planet prevented South Africa from picking a Commonwealth Sevens team strong enough to win gold. But they did not. They picked instead a “transformation” or “development” team who ended up getting flicked in the preliminary paddling-pool early quarter-finals stages.
Make your bed, but then be ready to sleep in it.

who cares about 7′s, the aussies picked some of their XV squad cos the’re normally **** at 7′s and hate losing in front of their own crowd, so they boulstered their team.

That is whwat happens when you send the “friends of Paul Treu” club to play against the better teams in the world. The collective IQ of SA Rugby was again not high enough to see this one coming. None of the SA team members could make it in the 15 man game.

Cab, I agree. All this blether about 7s. Who cares about 7s. And the “Commonwealth Dream”? This is a dream that hardly gets my pulse racing.
Though obviously it gets Tacklers heart jumping around like a jack hammer. Then again, to a New Zealander, any crowd bigger than a few hairy hobbits sitting around in The Cake Tin, represents some sort of World Event.

Quota systems must remain in place to keep ****’s like tt out the country.The kiwi’s implemented this years ago and look what it has done to there rugby.
