Relief for Scots in Rome

A 78th minute penalty from winger Chris Paterson gave Scotland a narrow 13-10 victory over Italy in Rome on Saturday.

The Scots, having beaten France and England, finish their campaign with three victories, while the much-improved Italians end bottom of the log with a solitary point.

Italy took an early 7-0 lead when centre Mirco Bergamasco dived on a clever kick ahead by flyhalf Ramiro Pez, but Paterson responded soon after with a five-pointer of his own.

The teams were locked at 10-all for the majority of the second half until a Jason White tackle on Andrea Lo Cicero forced the Italian to hold onto the ball on the ground. Paterson kicked the three points from 40m out, much to the disgust of the home crowd.

Scorers:

Italy – Try: Mirco Bergamasco. Conversion: Ramiro Pez. Penalties. Pez (2)

Scotland – Try: Chris Paterson. Conversion: Paterson. Penalty: Paterson. Drop goal: Gordon Ross.
