Juan injury jolts Cheetahs

The Cheetahs emerged with a famous Vodacom Super 14 victory at Newlands on Saturday, but at serious cost. Captain Juan Smith is out for a minimum of four weeks.

Smith has stood tallest in a side again punching above its weight, and his loss both as a player and a leader is hugely significant.

Speaking to keo.co.za, Smith confirmed that the earliest he can expect to return is the Chiefs fixture in Hickville on 21 April.

“I’m out for a minimum of four weeks,” Smith said. “I’m going to have an MRI scan later this morning to confirm, but four weeks seems to be the consensus.”

Smith was injured midway through the first half when he was tackled simultaneously by Schalk Brits and JD Moller.

“JD tackled me from behind as Schalk did from the front, and then JD landed on my knee, damaging the medial ligaments.”

Despite his personal disappointment, Smith commended his teammates for weathering the Stormers backlash in the second half.

“It was an awesome win for us. We really had to dig deep to get the win after they fought back really well, but the guys showed a lot of character. We have one more home game and it’s vital we win that before our overseas tour.”

The boys from Bloem face the Rubble Reds this weekend.
