All Black flyhalf Luke McAlister is expected to return to the Blues squad for their Vodacom Super 14 rugby match against the Waratahs in Sydney on Friday.
McAlister and winger Doug Howlett will undergo fitness tests before the team leaves for Sydney.
McAlister has been out of action for about a month after suffering a hairline fracture to the jaw and Howlett was ruled out of the Commonwealth Games sevens side with a hamstring problem.
Howlett’s hamstring was still suspect and he would probably not be back playing this week, but McAlister’s chances looked good at their light training session.
Flanker Justin Collins, injured about a month ago, will still be out with his ruptured achilles tendon and not expected back for another couple of weeks.
There are several other injured players in the side, flanker Daniel Braid and halfback Steve Devine among them.
