Western Province moved into semi-final contention in the Vodacom Cup with a 18-9 victory against Border Bulldogs. Michael Vlismas reports.
The Cape Town team are now fourth after a dismal start to their season, but they have played an extra game to the other play-off contenders. For the Bulldogs, the defeat compounds their troublesome season and they are now second last on the log above the Eagles.
The halftime score was locked at 6-6, with the Bulldogs’ Oliver Fowls and Western Province’s Ricardo Croy trading two penalties apiece. Western Province were by far the better team in the second half and two tries ensured their away win, with Richard Lawson and Ridhaa Damon dotting down and Croy slotting a conversion.
Fowls kicked another penalty for the Bulldogs, but ultimately it was a reach too far for the Eastern Cape men as their coastal rivals won their fourth match out of seven. The Bulldogs have only a win against rivals the Mighty Elephants to show for their
season thus far.
