Jake’s secret Bok captain
1 Apr 2006
If John Smit were injured, Jake White would appoint someone from outside his current squad to take over the job.
The Bok coach believes you chose your captain first and then the rest of the team.
“I know exactly what I would do if John was injured today and I had to chose a captain for the next Test,” he told Weekend Argus writer Gavin Rich. “If John broke down I would change my team to accomodate a good captain that I have identified.
“That player is not currently part of the run on team and has not been a regular member of my squad in the last two years, but he is a player who is highly respected as a leader.”
White said that while there were good leaders in the current squad, they wouldn’t take over from Smit if he was injured.
“We have players in the squad who have leadership experience. De Wet Barry, Victor Matfield and Schalk Burger have all captained teams at provincial and Super 14 level, but even with that being so, I would still make changes to accommodate a captain from outside the current team if Smit was injured. And I would do this even if the player was not the best in his position.
“I place a high premium on captaincy and the quality of captaincy that is delivered can make a massive difference to your team’s success rate. You have to have someone who can motivate his fellow players across the colour line, across the language barrier, across the cultural differences.”

Hmm, doing some fishing Simon?
Your article does not say where Jake said it, if you spoke to him about it or if the broken telephone syndrome took over and you have finished a nice article with no direct line to the man?
After saying that, the point of a good captain is just that, a good point!
However, if one looks to someone out of his squad still being a good captain, he would already be contracted to the Stormers coz they sure need one!

its me, all those years of being first team sand, water and orange boy finally pay off, thanks jake.
1 Apr 2006, 09:21 am
if not me, then perhaps AJ
1 Apr 2006, 09:24 am
definately AJ, There is no one else
1 Apr 2006, 09:28 am
AJ, come on boys, he is old school, think he is past his prime!
Sorry AJ, the ball never bounced properly for you. I have always rated you as a good player but …
1 Apr 2006, 09:38 am
duke, dont write AJ off just yet, he has been brilliant this season (well, the little i have seen). there is life in him yet.
look what jake did for monty and os, and before he was injured AJ was always in jakes team. that is also when schalk was at his best. i reckon if he stays injury free he will play for the boks this year.
my bok loose trio would be
6 schalk
7 AJ
8 juan/big joe
nice balance of speed and strength.

Forget it, it’s Wickus!! Only one man for the job and that is Captain Courageous!! Cornje Krige was never Captain Courageous, maybe Captain Butthead but never courageous. There can be only one… Wickus!!!!
1 Apr 2006, 10:06 am
wikus van heerden
1 Apr 2006, 10:07 am
but then why does the cats and lions lose the big ones under his leadership.
i rate him, but his captaincy is a tough one for me.

” You have to have someone who can motivate his fellow players across the colour line, across the language barrier, across the cultural differences.â€
Luke Watson?

Wickus, Wickus, Wickus, Wickus…!!!! Oops… Wikus, Wikus, Wikus….
1 Apr 2006, 10:20 am
Has to be WICKUS vAN HEERDEN — he should be playing in any event, but JW sticks with the ponderous BULLS loose forwards and he should note now taht this approach to rugby is not working and will never achieve anything.
Also he needs to pick players with PLENTY of gas from 10 thru to the wings, pace will always give you the edge.
Any scrumhalf that stands around and shouts at the forwards instead of distributing the ball with skill and speed needs to get the chop or go back to “school” – It is pityful how long our scrummies take to make a decision — and many times the decision is the wrong one — eish. Du PREEZ is teh worst culprit, please JW get him out the squad, he walks around like a zombie.

In the article it in the Saturday Argus they suggested it might be Wikus, but I think its more likely to be AJ.
1 Apr 2006, 10:29 am
Bollocks, its The Gasman!”!!!m Thats why he’s been pulled out of the Stormers squad. Its so he can attent lots of skills and leadership development courses at Damelin…. That Jake is a wily old fox.
1 Apr 2006, 10:30 am
Wickus for a leader who leads by example. Fourie du Preez for brain power. Jake would probably fancy an English speaking dude like Joe van Niekerk.
1 Apr 2006, 10:33 am
wikus all the wayy!!!!!
1 Apr 2006, 10:44 am
Duke,
I quote the Weekend Argus. Can you not read?
1 Apr 2006, 10:44 am
look at the date of the article you idiots!
1 Apr 2006, 10:53 am
It has to be Wickus.
He is a great captain, but obviously choosing your captain first isn’t working for the Cats
1 Apr 2006, 11:00 am
KTB as opposed to any other type of play in South Africa thats working? lol
Shai ha ha
next one will be a give away
Fester to take JW posistion.
1 Apr 2006, 11:01 am
Shai,
It’s not an April fools joke.
1 Apr 2006, 11:23 am
It’s definitely Wikus van Heerden. Hasn’t been a regular member of the squad and I’d say he’d be pretty damn close to being the best captain in South Africa. I can’t imagine Jake making AJ captain, just can’t see it happening.
1 Apr 2006, 11:27 am
If it is not an April Fool then I would reckon upon Luke Watson (Wikus is ruled out because he has been part of his squad unless he covered that by “regular” squad and Wikus was only a tourist last year.
But Luke Watson has all the credentials of a Bok Captain – he can string a sentence together in English for a start!! Don’t be fooled that is very important as far as a National Captain goes. After results the Captain sets the reputation of the National team because it is the only conduit to the team that the media and thus public has.

Wickus is a greate player but captain? There should be more then leading by examle. He was giving all in this year s14 for the lions but they are still loosing. The first time Wickus was selected for boks was when he played for Bulls. He needs good tight 5 then he is unstopable. I would love him playing for the bulls.
1 Apr 2006, 12:38 pm
Simon
Are you here??? Loved your chirp in SARugby. You trully hurt my feelings! I’m very sophisticated. All my beer bellied, vellie wearing, Bulls supporting mates all agree I’m the classiest off them all!!! My vellies ares red because I’m a Lion!!!
1 Apr 2006, 12:39 pm
Plus: Wickus van Heerden for Bok captain and sommers the Cats to win Super14!!! Put that in yours pyp and smokes it up…!!!
1 Apr 2006, 13:24 pm
Grrr…
I never chirped you – Judge did.
1 Apr 2006, 13:35 pm
Apologies then, though you were the Judge. Send my regards to the old law man then.
1 Apr 2006, 13:36 pm
…thought…
1 Apr 2006, 13:38 pm
Definitely AJ
1 Apr 2006, 13:40 pm
Wickus!!!
1 Apr 2006, 13:41 pm
Old Fabio should stick to modeling… And please, get him a proof reader for his website. The man caren’t spells!!!!
1 Apr 2006, 14:30 pm
Wickus all the way, not his fault that the Cats are losing, I reckon he’d be better
on his own
1 Apr 2006, 14:38 pm
Bobby Skinstad
1 Apr 2006, 14:59 pm
Francois Pienaar…
1 Apr 2006, 15:01 pm
Chilliboy
1 Apr 2006, 15:08 pm
Thys Lourens…
1 Apr 2006, 15:10 pm
There is only one standout player and captain.
Wickus.
The rest like Watson can barely make their S14 sides….
Grrr, wat sê jy oor spelling?
1 Apr 2006, 15:18 pm
Agree about Wickus, although he is not the brainiest captain around, he is the only other one worth respect.
1 Apr 2006, 15:40 pm
On what do you base that conclusion Sarky?
Thats what a lot of people also said about Wahl Bartmann etc.
1 Apr 2006, 16:26 pm
Stan, AJ makes the sharks super 14 team every weekend.
1 Apr 2006, 16:31 pm
Knersus,
True.
But would you pick him above Schalk, Pedrie or Juan?
Like Danie R, he is a perfect impact player currently.
Wickus has been a captain for almost 3 years running and i rate him higher as a blindside flanker.
1 Apr 2006, 16:55 pm
Wat het ek verkeerd gespel Stan?
1 Apr 2006, 18:02 pm
Oops, sorry Simon missed that! It was 2:30 in the morning here when I read the article. Maybe I’ll get some sleep before I try catch up with the news! (“,)
2 Apr 2006, 08:08 am
You all smokin’ some strange dope man,It has to be the return of the VOS!!!!!!
AVOS to the rescue.
2 Apr 2006, 11:12 am
The good news about Wickus is that maybe Jake has realised that strongman and small brain J.Cronje can be relegated. That means he doesnt have to think about SB or Juan,….they are in,with AJ ,Pedrie and Big Joe if he stays fit getting the squad berths.
Now we’re talking.Loosies that double as locks, not bad.
2 Apr 2006, 14:29 pm
Wikus Vaporub? Hell, under his expert captaincy the Cats are SURE to win the Super 14, hey? (Well, after all the other teams have died of bird flu..)
2 Apr 2006, 15:27 pm
Yeah I reckon it’s wikus. He is an outstanding leader in a very ordinary cats outfit at the moment.
2 Apr 2006, 18:13 pm
wickus van heerden
2 Apr 2006, 18:14 pm
could be andre vos, but its probably wickus
3 Apr 2006, 12:07 pm
It will be Jacques Cronje.
“Kick for posts or go for the try, Jacque?”
“Just give me the ****** ball, man! I’ll hand off all okes in Black jerseys.”
3 Apr 2006, 15:07 pm
Hope it isn’t Wickus, for obvious reasons. Probably is him, though.
I would prefer the GAFF.
Have your say
