A third AB crocked

The third member of Graham Henry’s all-counquering Grand Slam All Blacks is out for the 2006 season.

Blue utility forward Angus Macdonald has joined Conrad Smith and Nick Evans on the sidelines after rupturing knee ligaments in the Blues 30-17 win against the Bulls in Auckland.

Macdonald played against Scotland in the test that clinched the All Blacks the Grand Slam.

Evans, who played two of the tests and was in superb form for the Highlanders this season, and Smith, the favourite to slot into the All Blacks midfield in Tana Umaga’s absence will be more missed than Macdonald, who was someway down the pecking order among the loose-forwards.

Macdonald’s value is that he can also play lock.

Blues coach David Nucifora has not yet replaced him.

Always sad when a player gets injured.I wish him all the best with his recovery.Same for the Fijian who broke his arm in the Sevens final against England.

Angus McDonald, lucky it was not a fullback, coz we don’t have many of those around, that is of international quality. Hard Luck. Not what the blues needed.

Sad to lose anybody, but they certainly have the depth to cover most positions.

A whole raft of player who could have returned last weekend were held back – including Tana Umaga.

The respective coaches have resisted and have waited another week or two.

Barring further injury, NZ will have a VERY solid base of fit players to choose from when we move into the international program.
