Dubai gods smile on baby Boks
5 Apr 2006
Slaughtered by France, the baby Boks got some good news on day one of the IRB World under 19 championships. England and Samoa also lost.
The South Africans, defending champions, need to get enough points to finish in the top four and qualify for the semi-finals. To set themselves up they have to beat Samoa and England, and their league position would have been strengthened by Ireland stunning England 17-16 and Argentina beating Samoa 10-8.
Outside of France’s emphatic 42-3 win against the baby Boks, the traditional powerhouses of the southern hemisphere, New Zealand and Australia, were comprehensive winners against Wales and Scotland respectively.
New Zealand beat Wales 38-14, while the Aussies humiliated Scotland 78-3.
In other matches, Japan beat Romania 38-30 and Fiji edged Italy 38-30.
